About the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society
The Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society (VAFCS) is a community-led Indigenous organization dedicated to supporting the cultural, educational, social, recreational, and economic well-being of urban Indigenous Peoples. Through a wide range of programs and services, VAFCS creates culturally safe spaces that promote belonging, wellness, self-determination, and opportunity for individuals, families, Elders, youth, and children.
Position Summary
The Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for leading the day-to-day maintenance operations of VAFCS facilities by supervising maintenance staff, coordinating preventive and corrective maintenance activities, ensuring safe and efficient building operations, and providing hands-on support as operational needs require. This position plays an important role in maintaining safe, welcoming, and culturally respectful environments that support VAFCS programs, services, residents, staff, Elders, families, and community members.
Reports to: Director of Operations
Supervises: Maintenance Worker(s)
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership and Operations
- Supervise, mentor and support Maintenance Worker(s).
- Plan, assign and monitor daily, weekly and seasonal work.
- Prioritize maintenance requests and respond to urgent issues.
- Monitor work quality and productivity.
- Provide coaching, orientation and performance feedback.
- Promote teamwork and respectful communication.
Facility Maintenance
- Coordinate routine and emergency repairs.
- Conduct routine inspections of all VAFCS facilities.
- Monitor HVAC, plumbing, electrical, security and life safety systems.
- Ensure building systems remain safe and operational.
- Identify maintenance priorities before issues become emergencies.
Hands-on Maintenance Support
- Assist with maintenance work and cleaning as operational needs and workload require.
- Assist with carpentry, plumbing, painting, drywall, lighting, and other minor repairs.
- Assist with snow removal and grounds maintenance.
- Respond to urgent maintenance issues.
- Support emergency situations.
Event & Facility Support
Specifically recognizing VAFCS operations:
- Coordinate room setups for meetings, ceremonies and community events.
- Assist with setup and takedown of the Judge Alfred Scow gymnasium and Chief Simon Baker room (CSBR) or other VAFCS rooms used for community meetings or events.
- Ensure event spaces are safe, clean and operational.
Health, Safety & Security
- Promote safe work practices and ensure compliance with WorkSafeBC and organizational policies.
- Maintain maintenance records, inspection logs, and inventory.
- Order supplies and equipment as required.
- Report significant maintenance issues and recommend improvements.
Collaboration
- Work closely with Directors, Managers and Program staff.
- Coordinate contractor access.
- Support cultural events.
- Provide excellent service to staff and visitors.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum two (2) years' building maintenance experience.
- Previous supervisory or leadership experience is an asset.
- Building Service Worker Certificate is an asset.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of building maintenance, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and life safety systems.
- Ability to plan and prioritize multiple tasks.
- Robust communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient with basic computer applications for maintenance documentation.
- Ability to perform physical work and lift equipment as required.
Additional Requirements
- Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence is an asset.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector Check.
Working Conditions
This position requires work at various VAFCS locations and involves indoor and outdoor duties, moderate to heavy lifting, ladder work, and occasional evening or weekend work to support organizational operations and community events.
Pay: From $24.41 per hour
