THE OPPORTUNITY

A well-established, privately held, mid-sized Canadian organization with multiple business entities and operations across North America is seeking an experienced CPA to join its management team as Senior Controller.

The organization operates through several business divisions serving diverse commercial markets. This description is intentionally general because the search is being conducted in strict confidence.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Finance, the Senior Controller will lead the Accounting Department and oversee financial reporting, treasury, budgeting, forecasting, payroll, selected human resources administration, and financial and tax compliance. The position is responsible for an established team of approximately six employees.

This is a senior, hands-on role requiring strong technical accounting capabilities and experience working in a multi-entity, multi-division, or comparably complex corporate environment.

The successful candidate will help strengthen financial reporting and controls, modernize systems and processes, and provide meaningful financial information to support strategic and operational decision-making.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements

Oversee consolidated and entity-level financial reporting

Provide senior management with financial analysis, forecasts, and performance reporting

Direct the annual budgeting process and monitor performance against established plans

Manage cash flow, corporate banking relationships, treasury activities, and working-capital requirements

Maintain appropriate accounting policies, approval procedures, internal controls, and financial-governance practices

Oversee payroll and selected human resources administration functions

Ensure compliance with GST/HST, corporate tax, and other statutory requirements

Coordinate relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, banks, insurers, and other professional-service providers

Lead, coach, and develop the accounting and administrative team

Review existing procedures and introduce improvements to efficiency, accuracy, reporting, and accountability

Support the organization’s transition to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central

Expand the organization’s financial analysis and business-intelligence capabilities

Assist senior management with financial planning, business evaluation, and operational decision-making

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates should possess:
A Canadian CPA designation

A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related discipline

At least 8 to 10 years of progressive accounting and financial-management experience

Several years of experience leading an accounting department or team

Strong technical accounting and financial-reporting expertise

Experience with budgeting, forecasting, cash management, treasury, payroll, and tax compliance

Experience developing employees and improving the effectiveness of an accounting team

A strong understanding of internal controls, financial governance, and risk management

Experience working within a multi-entity, multi-division, or comparably complex corporate environment

Knowledge of Canadian corporate taxation and GST/HST requirements

Exposure to payroll, benefits, and human resources administration

Experience in a privately held organization with multiple operating entities or divisions would be particularly relevant.

LEADERSHIP AND PROFESSIONAL ATTRIBUTES

The successful candidate will demonstrate:
Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities

Excellent technical accounting knowledge

Sound commercial judgment and an understanding of business operations

A practical, hands-on, and solutions-oriented management style

Strong leadership, coaching, and staff-development abilities

The ability to explain financial information clearly to non-financial executives and managers

Excellent planning, organizational, and project-management skills

Superior attention to detail and accuracy

The ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines

A high degree of integrity, professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality

A continuous-improvement mindset focused on systems, processes, controls, and reporting

TECHNOLOGY AND SYSTEMS EXPERIENCE

The Senior Controller must be highly proficient with financial systems and technology.

Candidates should offer:
Advanced Microsoft Excel capabilities

Solid proficiency with Microsoft Word,

Outlook, and PowerPoint

Experience with modern financial-management and ERP platforms

Experience participating in or leading an ERP implementation, conversion, or modernization project

Familiarity with corporate banking and treasury-management platforms

Experience with ADP Workforce Now or a comparable payroll and human resources information system

Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is highly desirable.

Experience with Microsoft Power BI, financial dashboards, data visualization, or comparable business-intelligence applications would be a significant asset.

Direct experience with every listed system is not required. Broad ERP expertise, advanced Excel capabilities, and the ability to provide financial leadership during a significant systems transition will be important.

WHY CONSIDER THIS OPPORTUNITY?

This is an opportunity to assume a visible and influential financial leadership position within a secure and successful organization.

The successful candidate will work closely with senior management, lead an experienced team, and play a central role in strengthening reporting, internal controls, technology, and business processes across multiple entities or divisions.

The position is particularly attractive for a technically strong CPA who enjoys combining hands-on financial leadership with team development, systems modernization, and strategic business support.

It provides executive-level compensation, an industry-leading benefits package, and a senior career opportunity in York Region without the daily commute to downtown Toronto.
