Health and Safety Advisor (Contract - Full Time)

Salary: $48,786.00/yr - $60,982.00/yr
Start Date: Immediately

What qualifications are we looking for?

The Advisor, Health & Safety at YMCA helps create safe environments where employees, volunteers, children, and families can thrive. This role provides support to the association staff related to the establishment and maintenance of a safe, forward-thinking and healthy environment where safety, well-being and community comes first.

This position reports to the Director, Health, Safety and Risk and works closely with the Duty Managers, Supervisors and Health and Safety Committees, to execute on Safeguarding,



life safety systems and health and safety activities. Key priorities for the role include advising workers, supervisors, and volunteers, on YMCA Calgary’s safety management programs and systems; supporting incident response and delivery of safety training..

We strive to ensure our employees are a fit based on their strengths, interests, and future goals. The successful candidate will have the following:

- 1-2 years’ experience working within occupational health and safety, emergency response, or related field

- Post-secondary degree, diploma, or certification in Health, Safety and Environment, or relevant education

- A solid understanding of OHS and how to apply the principles of human and organization performance is an asset

- Supervisory/management experience is an asset

- Excellent attention to detail, exercising a high degree of accuracy

- Strong written and verbal communication skills

- Demonstrate practical judgement, sense of urgency and ability to manage priorities

- Experience working with a variety of business software and technology

- Ability to travel between YMCA Calgary branches and sites

- Current Standard First Aid with CPR-C certificated within the last 12 months from an approved AB OHS provider. Asset if certification is issued by one of the following five Canadian organizations: Canadian Red Cross, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Lifesaving Society, St John's Ambulance and/or Canadian Ski Patrol.

- Evidence of a clear Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Search

- Three professional references

What does this role look like at YMCA Calgary?

Duties and responsibilities include:

The Advisor shall work collaboratively with operations staff to:

- Advise staff and volunteers on the alignment with Alberta OHS and procedures that support YMCA Calgary’s evolving operations with specific focus on:

o Hazard identification, control and injury prevention
o Member experience safety
o Child safety and protection




o Reviewing and assisting with learning from near misses and normal work
o Building capacity amongst staff and volunteers’ adoption of protected work practices and procedures

- Provide support during the completion of audits, inspections, training and coordination of work group activity to assess hazards and implement controls.

- Where requested lead investigations and reporting, coordinating stakeholders as required.

- Provide support to our asset management team and assist with contractor safety management.

- The advisor must be comfortable and competent to deliver face-to-face health and safety training.
