Job Summary:

Simulated Patients (SPs) in the Reitman Centre CARERS Program (RCCP) help caregivers practice real-life conversations in a safe and supportive environment.

In this role, you will take part in guided practice scenarios where you respond as a person living with dementia, based on situations shared by care partners in the group. These interactions help caregivers build communication skills and confidence.

You are not expected to have prior experience in dementia care or acting. Instead, you will receive training and support to help you respond in a natural, thoughtful, and compassionate way.

SPs participate as part of the learning process, helping care partners better understand how communication can be improved. This includes engaging in short role-play scenarios and offering simple, honest feedback about how the interaction felt from your perspective.

Training includes an introduction to dementia, caregiver experiences, and guidance on how to participate in scenarios and provide feedback. Observing group sessions is also part of the training and helps SPs become comfortable and confident in the role.

Responsibilities:

- Participation in full training (including e-learning and in-person or virtual sessions with an SP educator)
- Punctual attendance at scheduled group sessions (in person and virtual)
- Engage in short, guided role-play scenarios with care partners
- Respond in a realistic and compassionate way, adapting to the interaction as it unfolds




- Listen carefully and gather any relevant details needed for the scenario
- Provide clear, concise feedback about your experience during the interaction
- Maintain confidentiality
- Quiet and attentive observation when not actively participating
- Prompt submission of invoices or hours as per institution protocols

Job Qualifications

No specific educational background or experience with dementia is required.

We are looking for individuals who are:

- Compassionate and empathetic
- Valuable listeners
- Comfortable engaging in sensitive or emotional situations
- Open to feedback and willing to learn
- Able to respond thoughtfully in the moment

Individuals from a variety of backgrounds may be well suited to this role, including retirees, educators, artists, and those with lived caregiving experience.

Other Requirements:

- Flexible schedule Bilingualism (English/French) is considered an asset
- A valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle (facilitator may be open to providing transportation)
- Criminal Records Verification including Vulnerable Sector Screen
