Overview

As a member of the military, an Artillery Officer is expected to coordinate and execute indirect fire support, ground‑based air defense, surveillance and target acquisition, and provide tactical advice as part of the combat arms team. The officer works closely with members of the Armoured, Infantry, and Combat Engineering regiments as well as all other support arms on and off the battlefield.

There are three specialized areas for an Artillery Officer: Field Artillery Officer, Air Defense Officer, and Target Acquisition Officer. Each is expected to become an expert on its own technologically complex equipment and its tactical employment.

Expertise

- Field Artillery Officers: Howitzers and Mortars; Battlefield Surveillance Radars; Observation & Fire Control Systems; Coordination and integration of indirect fire and close air support.
- Air Defense Officers: Air Surveillance Radars; Tactical Data Link Systems; Future Ground‑Based Air Defence Systems.
- Target Acquisition Officers: Uncrewed Aerial Systems; Acoustic Weapons Locating Systems; Weapons Locating Radars; Artillery Intelligence and Counter‑Battery Fires.

Work Environment

An Artillery Officer can be called upon to serve in any terrain—Arctic tundra, tropical jungle, desert, mountains, or urban towns and cities. Officers are deployed overseas on operational missions and within Canada in support of civil authorities during national emergencies.

Initially, officers are posted to one of five Artillery regiments:

- 1st Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group, Shilo, Manitoba
- 2nd Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group, Petawawa, Ontario
- The Royal Canadian Artillery School, Combat Training Centre, Gagetown, New Brunswick
- 4th Artillery Regiment (General Support) Royal Canadian Artillery, Gagetown, New Brunswick
- 5th Canadian Light Artillery Regiment,



5 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group, Valcartier, Quebec

Regular Force members are assigned to a base after training and may relocate during their career. Primary Reserve members serve on a part‑time basis through a specific reserve unit, typically one night per week and some weekends. Reserve officers can volunteer for deployments and may qualify for pension contributions.

If you already hold a university degree, the CAF will assess your program and may place you directly into the required on‑the‑job training after basic training. Regular Officer Training includes full‑time salary, medical and dental benefits, and paid vacation in exchange for service in the CAF.

Training

Basic officer training (BMOQ) lasts 12 weeks at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School, covering military knowledge, leadership principles, small‑arms handling, and first aid. Basic Military Officer Qualification (BMOQA) lasts another 12 weeks at the Infantry School, focusing on advanced weaponry, fieldcraft, and tactics.

Further courses at the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery School introduce leadership duties within the artillery. Candidates learn about reconnaissance, deployment, firing data calculation, and technical duties for both Field Artillery and Ground‑Based Air Defense officers.

Specialized training includes developing expertise in target acquisition systems such as radars, acoustic sensors, and unmanned aerial systems, and in coordinating indirect fires as a Fire Support Officer.

Part‑time Options

This position is available for part‑time employment with the Primary Reserve at various locations across Canada. Reserve Force members serve part‑time at a home unit but may also serve full‑time in certain units for fixed terms. Compensation is 92.8% of Regular Force rates, with perks and pension contributions.
