Health, Safety & Environmental Manager (HSE Manager)
Full-Time | Hamilton, ON (Travel Required)
Pay Range: $120,000-$135,000
This is not a typical safety management position.
If you're looking for a role where success is measured by inspections completed, paperwork filed, or rules enforced, this probably isn't the right fit.
If you want to:
- Lead and influence how work is planned and executed
- Partner with operations to solve complex challenges
- Coach leaders and develop people
- Improve systems, not just maintain them
- Help shape the future of Health, Safety & Environment within a leading construction organization
...this role is built for that.
Why Soletanche Bachy Canada – We Care
At Soletanche Bachy Canada, safety isn't a rulebook. It's how we care for each other. We are building a culture where people feel safe to speak up, leaders coach rather than blame, learning is valued alongside compliance, and risks are managed through effective planning, systems, and critical controls.
With more than 120 years of experience in North America and as part of the Soletanche Freyssinet global group, we combine local expertise with international capability while creating an environment where people can lead meaningful change.
What This Job Actually Is
This is a leadership position. You'll spend time where work happens, supporting projects, coaching leaders, working with field teams, and helping solve operational challenges before they become incidents. You won't simply oversee safety programs. You'll help improve how work is planned, communicated, supervised, and learned from. You'll work alongside Project Managers, Superintendents, Supervisors, clients, and senior leadership to strengthen operational performance while protecting people.
This role combines field leadership, operational support, strategic planning, and team development. No two days are the same.
What Your Day-to-Day Will Look Like
Operational Leadership
- Partner with Operations, Project Managers, Superintendents, and Supervisors to support safe project execution
- Spend regular time in the field understanding how work is actually performed
- Support project planning and execution from an operational risk perspective
- Help identify opportunities to strengthen critical controls before work begins
- Provide practical advice that balances production, quality, and safety
- Build trusted relationships across projects and business units
Serious Injury Prevention
- Lead initiatives focused on preventing serious injuries and fatalities
- Support identification and management of high-energy hazards
- Evaluate critical controls and verify they are effective in the field
- Participate in high-risk work planning and operational reviews
- Assist project teams in reducing exposure to significant operational risks
- Help improve how hazards are recognized, communicated, and controlled
Leadership Coaching & Development
- Coach supervisors and project leaders in effective safety leadership
- Mentor HSE Coordinators and emerging HSE professionals
- Strengthen communication, planning, and decision-making capabilities across teams
- Build trust through meaningful field engagement
Training & Communication
- Develop and deliver engaging training programs and workshops
- Create practical learning resources that improve understanding and retention
- Translate complex technical information into simple operational guidance
- Support organizational communication strategies that strengthen engagement
- Encourage innovative approaches to learning, including visual communication and emerging technologies
Systems, Reporting & Follow-Up
- Manage incident, inspection, audit, and improvement data within company systems (e.g., Flex Manager)
- Ensure corrective actions are completed, verified, and effective
- Analyze trends and performance indicators to identify improvement opportunities
- Support management reporting and organizational performance reviews
- Maintain HSE documentation that supports operational excellence and regulatory compliance
Project & Business Support
- Support project planning, mobilization, and tender reviews
- Assist with client requirements and regulatory compliance
- Contribute to emergency preparedness and response planning
- Build strong working relationships with clients, subcontractors, and regulatory agencies
- Support strategic HSE initiatives across multiple business units
Innovation
We believe innovation belongs in safety. You'll be encouraged to:
- Challenge traditional approaches
- Improve systems and processes
- Explore technology and digital tools
- Develop creative ways to engage people and strengthen operational performance
Communicate in Ways People Remember
Great safety communication isn't just policies and PowerPoint presentations. We're looking for someone who enjoys making complex ideas easier to understand and more engaging.
Experience or interest in any of the following is a bonus:
- Using AI to improve communication, planning, learning, and efficiency
- Creating visual learning resources, infographics, and safety graphics
- Developing isometric illustrations to explain work, incidents, and hazards
- Producing engaging presentations, videos, and digital learning content
- Finding creative ways to communicate lessons learned and operational risks
- Using technology to simplify complex information and improve understanding
Why This Role Stands Out: This is an opportunity to influence how one of Canada's leading specialty contractors approaches Health, Safety & Environment. You'll work alongside experienced operational leaders, help shape company standards, contribute to key HSE initiatives, and play a meaningful role in improving operational performance while preventing serious injuries.

We are committed to:
- A psychologically safe environment where you can learn and grow
- Fair and consistent accountability aligned with a Just Culture
- Supporting your development, not just evaluating performance
