Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Hardscape Foreman to lead our crew from the front. Daedalus Contracting is a hardscaping specialist — we build Allan Block retaining walls, Belgard paver patios, walkways and driveways, stacked stone walls, and synthetic turf across the Lower Mainland.
The ideal candidate has a solid working understanding of building Allan Block walls and setting pavers, has run hardscape jobs before, and leads by example — working alongside the crew and teaching as they go. Every wall and every patio lives or dies on the base prep, and you set that standard.
This is a working foreman role, not an entry-level posting and not a job you run from the truck. We're looking for someone who can take a job start to finish without a boss standing over them — work with their hands, sequence the work, keep the crew moving, teach and correct technique, and hold the standard on base prep and level.
Just as important: you keep the owner in the loop. When something comes up on site, we want a call that tells us what's happening and the solution you're proposing — not just the problem dropped in our lap. We're looking for someone who thinks critically and solves problems in the field.
Duties
- Run hardscape jobs day to day, hands-on— lead a crew of 2–4 installers and labourers from mobilization through final cleanup, working alongside them and setting the pace-
- Run the morning meeting— clearly lay out each worker's tasks for the day per the schedule so everyone knows their job before the tools come out- Teach and assist the crew hands-on in compaction and setting base courses — correct technique on the fly and bring people up to the standard
- Document and confirm before you build on it— verify the base course and compaction are right, record it, then fill and compact, repeating that check-then-build loop lift by lift through the whole job-
- Wall drainage is a required hold point — the drainage behind retaining walls (drain rock, perforated pipe, filter fabric) must be documented, photographed, and confirmed by the owner before it is backfilled or covered. Nothing gets buried until it's signed off
- Set out walls, patios, walkways and driveways from site plans and scope drawings — establish grade, benchmarks, and layout with laser levels, transits,
and string lines- Own base prep quality — excavation to grade, sub-base and base compaction in lifts, screeded setting beds, drainage, and slope for surface water management- Build and supervise the build of segmental retaining walls (Allan Block and similar) — leveling course, geogrid on the correct courses, drainage and backfill, capping-
- Supervise paver installation, reset/repair, garden walls, stacked stone, and synthetic turf to spec-
- Sequence the work and keep the crew productive against the schedule- Run daily safety on site — toolbox talks, hazard assessments, and WorkSafeBC compliance- Submit a daily foreman's report — confirm crew hours, report progress, flag any issue with a proposed solution attached (not just the problem), and give an honest read on each worker's strengths and weaknesses so we can map out growth and training.
- Provide takeoffs and updates when a job doesn't go as planned — quantify what changed and what's needed so the office can act on it- Think critically and solve problems in the field — make the call when you can, and bring options when you need direction- Interface professionally with homeowners on site- Operate hand tools, power tools, plate compactors, demo/wet saws, and (asset) mini-excavator / skid steer safely- Keep the site organized and clean; keep tools and equipment properly cared for
Skills
- Multiple years of hands-on hardscape experience, including time leading or running a crew — essential
- A solid working understanding of building Allan Block (segmental) retaining walls AND setting pavers :
- this is a must, not an asset: excavating to grade, lift-by-lift compaction, screeding, geogrid, drainage, first-course layout- Proven layout and grade-setting ability — laser level, transit, string lines
- Solid grading and compaction experience — cutting to grade for drainage and compacting base in lifts to spec — essential- Able to read site plans and scope drawings and set out a job from them accurately
- A working foreman who leads by example and teaches the crew — not someone who directs from the side- Critical thinking — comes to the owner with a proposed solution, not just a problem; can make the right call on site and communicate clearly about progress and issues
- Crew leadership: running a morning meeting, assigning work per the schedule, keeping pace, quality control, and correcting technique on the fly- Comfortable documenting the work and writing a daily report — hours, progress, and an honest read on each crew member's strengths and weaknesses
- Safety leadership — comfortable running toolbox talks and hazard assessments; familiar with WorkSafeBC standards
- Ability to operate small machinery (mini-excavator, skid steer) is an asset but not
- Experience with geogrid-reinforced walls or walls over 4 ft is an asset
- Experience installing drainage systems (perforated pipe, catch basins, French drains) is an asset- Experience installing artificial / synthetic turf is an asset- Knowledge of decks and concrete form work an asset but not required- Physically capable of demanding outdoor work — lifting block and pavers, working in all weather- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to job sites
- Safety-minded and dependable — the crew takes its cue from you
What We Offer $32– $40 / hr based on experience — we pay for someone who can run a job right and hold a crew to the standard
Specialist work— walls, pavers, and stone all season, not a different trade every week-
Real responsibility — you run the job; we don't micromanage good hands-
Room to grow with the company — we're expanding, and the foreman helps shape how we build
Your time off is your own — this is not a job where you're expected to answer calls or texts after hours. You may get one from time to time, but nothing is required of you until you're back on the clock the next day.
We're building custom software to keep all the details and logistics handled during on-site hours- High-quality residential projects with proper materials and equipment- A team that takes pride in clean, qualified builds
Pay: $32.00-$40.00 per hour
Work Location: In person
