The Physician
Assistant (PA) is an integral member of the Emergency Department interdisciplinary team and works collaboratively with Emergency Physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, and support staff to provide high-quality, patient-centered care within a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
Working under the supervision and delegation of the attending Emergency Physician and in accordance with approved medical directives, policies, and applicable legislation, the PA contributes to the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and disposition of patients presenting to the Emergency Department. In addition to direct patient care responsibilities, the PA plays a key role in advancing Emergency Department strategic priorities, including reducing Physician Initial Assessment (PIA) times, improving patient flow, supporting admission avoidance initiatives, optimizing Emergency Department length of stay, and enhancing the patient and family experience.
The PA works proactively to support timely assessment, diagnostic workup, treatment initiation, reassessment, and disposition planning to improve access to emergency care and overall departmental performance. The PA participates in quality improvement, patient safety, education, and operational initiatives, utilizing departmental performance indicators and data to support achievement of organizational and Emergency Department goals. The position may be strategically deployed based on patient volumes, demand patterns, operational priorities, and departmental performance metrics to maximize impact on patient access, flow, and quality of care.
The Physician
Assistant reports operationally and clinically to the Chief of Emergency Medicine, who provides oversight for role deployment, clinical practice, quality, and operational priorities within the Emergency Department. Administrative support for scheduling,
attendance management, payroll, and human resource processes is provided by the Emergency Department Manager. The position works collaboratively with the Director, Emergency Department, Critical Care, Respiratory Services and Trauma Program to support departmental strategic objectives, quality improvement initiatives, and operational performance.
Graduation from an Accredited Physician Assistant program. Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) or Physician Assistant Certification Council of Canada (PACCC) or eligible to be certified by PACCC. Minimum 2 years of PA experience an asset.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-acuity Emergency Department. Demonstrated commitment to patient safety and quality improvement. Minimum 2 years of Emergency Medicine, Urgent Care, Critical Care, Internal Medicine, or Acute Care experience.
Experience participating in quality improvement initiatives.
