The unit houses the Regional Thoracics Centre for our area as well as our Head and Neck and the Surgical Stepdown Units (SSDU). Specialty medical and surgical services support patients with newly diagnosed disease including thoracic and head and neck cancer reconstructive and plastic surgery and the care of patients with progressive illness.

Our 8-bed SSDU provides care for acutely ill surgical patients including those undergoing thoracic orthopaedic urology gynecology GI and General Surgical procedures. Our highly skilled and dedicated interprofessional team provide patient and family focused care and work to restore and maintain function in a highly collaborative and therapeutic care setting.Qualifications:Current registration with the College of Nurse of Ontario required ANDPractical Nursing Diploma from an accredited college program with evidence of IV medication administration as part of the basic educational curriculumORPractical Nursing Diploma from an accredited college program and IV medication administration certificate from an accredited college program if this content was not included in the basic diploma educational curriculumORPractical Nursing Certificate from an accredited college program a medication administration certificate and an IV medication administration certificate from an accredited college programA minimum of one year's recent acute surgical/medical nursing experience is requiredCurrent BCLS/HCP certification requiredDemonstrated knowledge sensitivity and expertise in the care of seniors and their familiesGentle Persuasive Approach training preferredMust be able to complete the orientation as requiredCompletion of the Epidural/PCA pain management therapy course during orientation is requiredCompletion of the venipuncture skill and demonstrated competency is requiredAbility to function to the full scope of practice as per the College of Nurses of OntarioAbility to function in a changing fast paced environmentDemonstrated ability to communicate effectively and maintain good interpersonal relationships and set own workload prioritiesCommitted to customer serviceDemonstrated problem-solving and organization skills and the ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary teamPreference will be given to applicants with recent experience in thoracic head and neck cardio-vascular surgery and plastic surgeryDemonstrated commitment to professional development and continuing educationGood work performance and attendance record are essentialSt. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) is an equal opportunity employer and strives for equity, inclusiveness, and diversity in all our programs, practices, facilities, and people.
