The Department of Psychiatry in Nanaimo is seeking a part‑time General Psychiatrist to provide services with the Complex Care Housing Team.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the Complex Care Housing (CCH) team, providing psychiatric services for at least 44 weeks per year, on average about 7.5 hours per week (≈330 hours per year, 0.2 FTE). The schedule may vary week to week but must ensure continuity of care during the year.
The patient population is based in Nanaimo and includes up to 30 adult patients experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity. These patients often have moderate to severe mental‑health, substance‑use or chronic medical comorbidities, behaviour problems, violence, hoarding, etc. The main goals are psychiatric and medical stabilization and supporting individuals to maintain housing.
The psychiatrist will provide psychiatric assessment, case formulation, and medication management for a full range of psychiatric disorders and comorbidities, including severe substance‑use disorders, within a community‑based in‑reach team. The work will be either on‑site in Island Health or at Nanaimo community supportive housing sites, and will involve collaboration with other physicians, nurse practitioners, case managers,
nurses, addiction medicine physicians and external community agencies.
Administrative duties include attending departmental and multidisciplinary meetings. On‑call responsibility is mandatory for Island Health psychiatrists, under a Departmental MOCAP contract, with an average of one weekend day every 4‑6 weeks. Services provided during on‑call are compensated by FFS and MOCAP.
Island Health provides administrative staff, computer system, integrated EMR, and office space.

Part‑time psychiatry positions can be combined with other part‑time positions to create a full‑time practice.
Education, Training and Experience
Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC) – Desired
Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC) eligible – Mandatory
Eligible for licensure in British Columbia
Interest and advanced training in addictions psychiatry would be valuable in this role
Solid commitment to team-oriented team‑based interdisciplinary practice and excellent communication skills are essential
