Purpose Of Position The Charge Technologist is responsible for the planning, organization, coordination, and control of a formally recognized laboratory unit/section (e.g., Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Transfusion Medicine, Microbiology, Pathology, Point of Care Testing, Specimen Management) to ensure the delivery of safe, accurate, efficient, and fiscally responsible laboratory services.
The Charge Technologist performs laboratory testing as required and, under the direction of the Manager and/or Medical Director, directs the work of assigned staff, ensures quality standards are met, and manages operational and staffing requirements of the unit.
Duties And Responsibilities Overall operation and performance of the assigned laboratory section
Supervision, coordination, and evaluation of staff and workflow
Accuracy, reliability, and timeliness of laboratory testing and reporting
Quality management systems, including QA, QC, and continuous improvement
Staff competency, training, and development
Regulatory, accreditation, and safety compliance
Operational reporting, workload monitoring, and variance analysis
Fiscal responsibility, including inventory and budget support
Patient-centered service delivery and interprofessional collaboration
Performs a range of routine and specialized laboratory tests as required
Ensures accurate, precise, and timely reporting of results
Exercises independent judgment in specimen handling, analysis, reporting, and interpretation
Acts as a technical resource and subject matter expert for staff and clinicians
Troubleshoots equipment, reagent, and process issues and implements corrective action
Maintains clinical competency and keeps current with advancements in laboratory practice
Plans, organizes, coordinates, and supervises the daily activities of the department
Assigns, reviews, and evaluates work of technologists, MLAs, and students




Approves or rejects results as appropriate
Provides technical guidance, coaching, and performance feedback
Assists Manager in setting performance standards, conducting performance reviews, and providing regular operational reports
Supports selection, orientation, and training of new staff
Ensures orientation, training, and competency assessment of staff and students
Conducts staff meetings, in-services, and education sessions
Establishes and maintains Quality Assurance and Quality Control programs in collaboration with the Manager and Medical Director
Ensures compliance with accreditation standards (e.g., Accreditation Canada Diagnostics), regulatory and legislative requirements, and professional standards (e.g., CMLTO)
Monitors QC data, EQA participation, audits, and corrective actions
Investigates incidents, complaints, and non-conformances and implements improvements
Leads and/or participates in root cause analysis (RCA) of laboratory-related incidents, errors, and non-conformances; implements and monitors corrective and preventive actions to reduce recurrence
Supports continuous quality improvement initiatives and promotes a culture of safety and accountability
Maintains workload statistics and prepares monthly and ad hoc reports
Reviews management reports and analyzes variances, recommending corrective actions
Identifies and implements process improvements, cost-saving initiatives, and system enhancements
Develops and updates bench manuals, policies and procedures, and laboratory service manuals




Conducts annual reviews of departmental processes and procedures
Participates in projects, committees, meetings, and operational initiatives
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications Current registration in good standing with CMLTO by remaining current in laboratory medicine and participating in available continuing education programs as required by the CMLTO.
Experience 5 years experience as a Medical Laboratory Technologist.
Skills & Ability Ability to work effectively and efficiently as a team member in a fast-paced environment in stressful situations.
Customer service, interpersonal and telephone skills.
Computer literacy in a Microsoft workplace.
Ability to maintain successful working relationships with the interdisciplinary team to achieve positive patient outcomes.
Ability to organize time effectively to perform the duties of the position.
Ability to meet and interact with people in a pleasant, professional, responsible and reassuring manner.

Working knowledge of all equipment and instruments used in assigned laboratory area.
Organize and supervise all aspects of preventative maintenance and associated instrument checks.
Attend current and new instrument courses and shares knowledge with lab staff.
