Position Overview
Under the direction of the Manager of Health Services, the incumbent is responsible for coordinating care related to specialized breastfeeding support for the Women’s Health Program. This includes providing quality care grounded in an Indigenous worldview, acting as a resource to other health care professionals, participating in the discharge process, educating patients, families, staff and students regarding Indigenous breastfeeding knowledge and beliefs, and performing other related duties as assigned.
This is a Designated Indigenous Position. The position may be held by someone of Indigenous ancestry: First Nation, Métis, Inuit and/or Non-Status. Candidates will be required to undergo screening as required. Applicants are encouraged to self‑identify as Indigenous in their cover letter and/or resume.
Experience
Minimum three years of recent clinical experience in maternal or newborn nursing.
Experience applying an Indigenous lens to health operations and providing culturally safe care and incorporating traditional Indigenous healing practices into health service delivery.
Lived experience and understanding of Indigenous healthcare priorities, services, and challenges alongside Indigenous culture, protocols, traditions and values within Manitoba communities and organizations.
Experience or knowledge of Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) and its relationship with the Manitoba health care system.
Knowledge of Indigenous medicines, healing practices, cultural norms and protocols.
Education
Graduation from an approved School of Nursing (BA/BDN) required. BN preferred.
Special Training
Successful completion of International Board‑Certified Lactation Consultant certification required.
Applicants without the certification may be considered on the condition that the successful candidate completes the certification during the next intake.
Completion of Indigenous cultural safety and anti‑racism training.
Completion of the Oshki‑Wenjack Course Indigenous Birthworker 4: Lactation Support or similar Indigenous‑specific lactation counselor training is considered an asset.
Knowledge of traditional medicines and ceremonies is an asset.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
Maintain and provide proof of registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM).
Active participation in qualified associations (e.g., Association of Regulated Nurses of Manitoba) preferred.
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training as per shared health policy.
Qualifications and Skills
Scope of practice as documented in the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA).
Demonstrated knowledge of Canadian colonial impacts on Indigenous people across social, spiritual, emotional, physical, mental and health contexts.
Knowledge and appreciation of the unique history, cultures, and rights of Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
Commitment to the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action and Manitoba’s Path to Reconciliation Act.
Understanding and commitment to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) as a framework for truth and reconciliation.
Knowledge of Indigenous cultural safety and anti‑racism actions, inquiries and reports (e.g., Jordan’s Principle, Joyce’s Principle and the Brian Sinclair Inquest).
Demonstrated knowledge of ethical principles and cultural protocols in interactions with Indigenous partners and organizations.
Knowledge of Indigenous health issues, population health, and health status of citizens in Manitoba.
Physical Requirements
Ability to perform the essential physical requirements of the position.
Moderate physical effort required.
Background Checks
This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
