Full‑time Regular Plumber position in Operations and Maintenance (O&M;) department, part of Facilities Management. The O&M; department is responsible for ensuring that all building structures and systems for University owned and leased properties are operated and maintained reliably, efficiently and cost‑effectively to provide a safe and comfortable work environment. Campus is divided into six operating zones.

Reports to the Supervisor, Maintenance. Performs work under minimal supervision. The role includes a continuous high volume of work with peak periods, requiring high physical and mental demands. Responsibilities cover installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of all plumbing and mechanical systems, from antiquated to advanced high‑tech electrical processes. Shift is a normal 7.5‑hour day, Monday to Friday, with possible shift transfers, overtime, rotating on‑call and on‑site callouts.

Key Responsibilities

Ensures the work assigned is completed as required and is in compliance with University specifications, standards, procedures and all relevant Plumbing Codes.

Familiarizes with all existing University structures and systems, acquiring knowledge of new trends, techniques, codes, and equipment as relevant.

Ensures that equipment, workspaces, and tools supplied by the University are used for their intended purposes and are maintained in a safe working order.

Manages own time effectively and keeps the immediate supervisor informed of activities and progress.

Provides customer service to internal stakeholders by interacting pleasantly and respectfully with co‑workers, supervisors, contractors, consultants, suppliers, students and other members of the University community, and evaluating customer satisfaction.

Maintains discretion, confidentiality, and attention to detail at all times.

Actively participates in own training and development in coordination with the department, demonstrating willingness to learn and adapt to change.

Meets all ongoing OHS initiatives, follows University OHS policies, procedures, and OHS legislation as required; ensuring personal, public and co‑worker safety when completing tasks or engaging in potentially hazardous situations.

Familiar with the University of Calgary Statement on Principles of Conduct and conducts self according to these Principles in all situations.

Ensures regular work attendance and timely reporting for the start of shift.





Ensures personal hygiene, attire, and grooming are appropriate for the work environment.

Provides customer service to internal stakeholders by interacting pleasantly and respectfully with co‑workers, supervisors, contractors, consultants, suppliers, students and other members of the university community, and evaluating customer satisfaction.

Qualifications and Requirements

Mandatory Provincial or interprovincial Plumbing Trade Certification with 3–5 years of experience.

Preference given to candidates with Power Engineering Certificates (5th to 1st Class), Gas‑fitting, Steam Fitting, and/or Cross Connection Control Testing Certificates.

Candidate must agree to attain minimum 4th Class Power Engineering within 12 months of employment. Training will be provided by employer.

Must hold a valid minimum Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License with less than 7 demerit points. Learners, probationary, graduated licence, or motorcycle/moped‑only licence will not be acceptable. A driver’s abstract will be requested.

Institutional setting experience is an asset.

Must have a good working knowledge of the Canadian Plumbing Code.

Must possess physical strength and stamina to lift heavy loads, be on feet for long periods, and work in cramped positions.

Must have mechanical ability, be able to use hand and power tools, work on ladders at various heights, and demonstrate a safety‑conscious attitude.

Must be able and willing to work in a variety of environments, including office settings, classrooms, research laboratories (including areas that support animals), mechanical rooms, and service tunnels.

Must have logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

Must have ability to work with others in a team environment, including mentoring and sharing knowledge with apprentices and co‑workers.

Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision to complete tasks assigned in a timely manner.





Must have a proven record of upgrading and updating applicable trade skills and staying current with industry trends.

Must have proven record of providing superior customer service, including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.

Must be able to listen to and understand information and ideas presented and communicate information and ideas so others will understand.

Must be able to manage own time effectively.

Must be able to use Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, e‑mail, and mobile communication devices such as iPhone and smartphone.

Working Conditions
Work is carried out within confined spaces, scaffolds, lifts, and heavy lifting up to 25 kilograms. Physical activities include climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials year‑round indoors and outdoors, in controlled hazardous environments.

Employment Details
Position is part of the AUPE Collective Bargaining Unit and falls under the Trades Job Family, Phase 2. The position will remain open until filled; applicants will be reviewed as they are received.
