What you'll do
BC Hydro is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Engineer to join our Energy Planning department. This role will play a critical part in shaping the future of BC's electricity system by advancing work on our resource options inventory, and supporting work on Load Resource Balance analyses. The successful candidate will also act as a key liaison between Energy Planning and Transmission Planning.

Key Responsibilities

Collaborate with Transmission Planning to identify and assess transmission resource options for long-term system planning.

Work with external researchers and consultants to develop techno-economic assessments of a range of demand and supply-side resource options.

Provide technical insights on the integration of renewable energy resources (e.g., wind, solar, hydro).

Conduct power system studies and modeling to support planning decisions.

Participate in cross-functional teams and working groups to align planning efforts across departments.

Prepare technical reports, presentations, and documentation for internal and external stakeholders.

Support regulatory filings and engagement processes related to transmission and resource planning.

Monitor and evaluate emerging technologies and trends in transmission and energy systems.

Ensure planning activities align with BC Hydro's safety, sustainability, and Indigenous engagement principles.

What you bring

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from a recognized institution.

Professional Engineer (P.Eng.)



designation in British Columbia or eligibility for registration.

Minimum 8 years of engineering experience in transmission planning, energy systems analysis, or related fields.

Strong understanding of energy system planning principles, including load flow, stability, and contingency analysis.

Experience in basic economic assessment of energy supply options.

Knowledge of non-wires alternatives and their application in utility planning.

Familiarity with renewable energy integration and its impact on transmission systems.

Proficiency in power system modeling tools such as PSS E, PSCAD, PowerWorld, or equivalent.

Experience working in cross-functional teams and managing multi-disciplinary projects.

Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to diverse audiences.

Understanding of BC Hydro's infrastructure and planning processes or similar utility systems.

Knowledge of regulatory and policy frameworks related to transmission and energy planning in BC.

Ability to identify and evaluate emerging technologies supporting grid modernization.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Commitment to safety, sustainability, and Indigenous engagement.

Applicants who do not meet the full qualifications or those with lesser work experience may be considered for a lower-level position.

NOTE: This will be a 1 year Full Time Temporary position.

NOTE: This role has been assessed as safety sensitive and pre-qualification alcohol and drug testing will be required as a pre-condition to employment.
