Extrusion R&D; Scientist (Food) Responsibilities Serve as the organization's extrusion subject matter expert, optimizing process parameters including moisture, temperature, screw configuration, shear, and throughput.
Develop innovative plant-based proteins,
cereals, snacks, crisps, and functional ingredients from concept through commercial-scale production.
Design and execute bench-top, pilot, and commercial trials; establish process specifications, operating windows, and technical standards for seamless scale-up.
Evaluate new raw materials and ingredient systems, troubleshooting complex processing challenges to ensure manufacturing efficiency and product quality.
Track emerging technologies in plant proteins, pulse processing, and alternative proteins; lead experimental design and develop proprietary processing methods and IP.
Provide customer-facing technical leadership, presenting findings and recommendations to clients during development projects and production trials.
Support commercial teams with deep extrusion expertise during customer engagements, translating technical capabilities into scalable product solutions.
Extrusion R&D; Scientist (Food) Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in food science, Food Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field; master’s or PhD preferred.
Solid 10+ years of industrial extrusion experience with a proven record of commercializing extruded food products.
Professional certifications such as Certified Food Scientist (CFS), HACCP, or PCQI preferred.
Proficiency in extrusion process control systems, SCADA,
and MES platforms.
Working knowledge of statistical and experimental design software (e.g., Minitab, JMP, Design-Expert).
Solid understanding of protein functionality, starch chemistry, and ingredient interactions in high-shear thermal processing.
Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and data analytics tools for process optimization and technical reporting.
Familiarity with food safety and quality systems (FSSC 22000, SQF, BRC, GMP) preferred.
Plant-based protein, pulse processing, or TVP experience are absolutely desirable.
Class 5 Driver's License & Reliable Transportation – Preferred for this role.
Willingness to Relocate – Able to relocate to Calgary, Alberta. Candidates residing outside of Alberta and outside of North America are encouraged to apply. Relocation assistance is available for eligible candidates.
