About the Opportunity Currently, Johnston Builders has an exciting opportunity for a Human Resources Manager to join our team in St. Albert, AB, or Whitehorse, YT on a full-time basis . Occasional travel to project sites will be required.
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and/or Chief Executive Officer, you will lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the organization's human resources function. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for building scalable HR systems, ensuring legislative compliance, supporting leaders across the business, and fostering a positive, high-performing workplace culture.
More specifically,



your responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Leading full-cycle recruitment, onboarding, and workforce planning for field and office employees
Developing, implementing, and maintaining HR policies, programs, and compliance initiatives aligned with employment legislation and OH&S; requirements
Managing employee relations, including investigations, conflict resolution, coaching, and performance management
Building and maintaining HR systems, documentation, employee records, and HRIS platforms to support organizational growth
Supporting employee development through training coordination, career development planning, and succession planning initiatives
Administering employee benefits, HR documentation, and organizational policies, including maintaining the Employee Handbook
Collaborating with leadership to develop HR strategies, workforce plans, and key performance indicators that support business objectives
Driving employee engagement, wellness, recognition, and retention initiatives across the organization
Partnering with operational leaders to foster a safe, inclusive, and collaborative workplace culture
Providing guidance and coaching to managers and employees on HR best practices, policies, and employment-related matters
Supporting organizational changes, including terminations, layoffs, and other employee lifecycle activities
Coordinating company-wide HR communications, training programs, employee surveys, and milestone initiatives
More About You To qualify, you will need post-secondary education in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field , and a minimum of 7 years of experience in an HR generalist or HR management role . Experience in the construction industry or supporting multi‑site, field-based workforces is an asset.



A valid Class 5 driver's licence is required.
Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:
CPHR designation, or actively working toward one
Experience with HRIS implementation and administration
Familiarity with KPA, Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC), Paymate Harmony, and Sage
Additional training in employment law, conflict resolution, or leadership development
Understanding of commercial and light industrial construction operations
Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365
