About Henley Strategies
Henley Strategies is a communications and government relations firm that helps organizations shape their narrative, engage decision-makers, and build public support. We combine strategic communications with public affairs expertise, and we hold ourselves to the highest standards of ethics, transparency, and compliance.
The opportunity
We are hiring for two roles on our Communications and Federal Government Relations team: a Junior Consultant and a Senior Consultant. Both roles are communications-forward, spanning strategic messaging, media relations, content and digital, and public affairs campaigns, alongside stakeholder engagement and policy work.
We welcome candidates based in Toronto, and we are open to candidates based in Ottawa.
What you'll do
- Develop communications strategies, messaging frameworks, and narratives for a portfolio of clients.
- Write and edit a wide range of materials: media releases, op-eds, speeches, talking points, briefing notes, web and social content, and stakeholder communications.
- Lead media relations, including building relationships with journalists, pitching stories, preparing spokespeople, and managing earned media.
- Plan and execute integrated public affairs and advocacy campaigns across traditional, digital, and social channels.
- Support issues and reputation management, including rapid-response and crisis communications.
- Monitor and analyze media, legislative,
regulatory, and political developments and translate them into clear client counsel.
- Build and maintain relationships with government officials, stakeholders, and media, and represent the firm with professionalism and discretion.
Junior Consultant — what we're looking for
- 1 to 3 years of relevant experience in communications, public relations, media, public affairs, government, or politics.
- Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to adapt tone and message for different audiences and channels.
- Familiarity with media relations, social and digital content, and communications tools.
- A solid understanding of how government, media, and the policy process work in Canada.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities under deadline.
Senior Consultant — what we're looking for
- 5 or more years of experience in strategic communications, public relations, public affairs, political staffing, or senior media roles.
- A demonstrated track record of leading communications and advocacy campaigns and delivering measurable results.
- Solid media relationships and experience acting as a trusted communications advisor to senior clients.
- Excellent writing, message development, and strategic judgment, with the ability to lead files independently.
- Experience with issues and crisis communications, and an established network across media, government, and industry.
- Experience mentoring junior staff and contributing to business development is an asset.
Required disclosures
As a government relations firm, we take lobbying compliance seriously. As part of your application, all candidates must disclose the following:
- Any lobbying restrictions or “cooling-off” / post-employment bans that apply to you under federal, provincial, or municipal lobbying or conflict-of-interest rules, including the applicable end date.
- Any campaign or political experience, including paid or volunteer roles with a candidate, campaign, political party, minister's office, or elected official, and the level of government involved.
These disclosures help us manage conflicts of interest and ensure compliance with lobbying legislation. They are reviewed confidentially and do not at all disqualify any candidate.
How to apply
Please send your resume, a brief cover note including the disclosures above, and two or three writing samples to . Indicate whether you are applying for the Junior or Senior role (or both), and your preferred location (Toronto or Ottawa).
Henley Strategies is an equal opportunity employer. We thank all applicants and will contact those selected for an interview.
