Job DescriptionOverviewThe Senior Structural Detail Designer is responsible for completing structural design assignments on new construction and repair projects at Vancouver Shipyards. Under the direction of the Manager, Structural Detail Design, the Senior Detail Designer participates in all phases of current construction design projects including 3D model and drawing development, design preparations, engineering support, design execution, and design close-out activities. This role liaises with internal and external partner design teams to ensure the ship design is produced in accordance with current equipment information and production design standards and procedures as assigned by the Manager, Structural Detail Design. Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site at 949 W 3rd Street West, North Vancouver.What You’ll DoLead and supervise the design being produced for structural content of the ship design.Allocate design/drafting work to team members. Ensure that personnel work within their competencies and with appropriate supervision.Support the Manager, Structural Detail Design by providing mentorship and guidance to other junior engineers, designers, or subcontractors in structural engineering and design.Provide design expertise in assigned areas of Structural Design by preparing and reviewing design and functional packages to ensure functional design requirements are met.Develop and/or review design drawings for fisheries, icebreaking, and naval replenishment vessels to achieve customer, Classification Society and regulatory approval.Prepare 3D models and design drawings based on engineering information,



site data and client requirements.Perform trade studies to determine cost-effective solutions and meet material budgets for assigned systems; identify opportunities to reduce material and labour costs.Develop material specifications and bills of material in accordance with Seaspan material strategies and customer requirements.Represent the company to industry to enhance Seaspan’s involvement in relevant programs and build our reputation.Ensure appropriate design methods are used and that design checks are undertaken.Correspond with clients, contractors, and others as required.Actively encourage and support a safety-oriented culture.What You’ll BringAssociate Design degree, diploma, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.7 - 10 years of relevant experience in Detailed Design in Manufacturing/Heavy Industries.Knowledge of marine structural design, including detailed knowledge of structural connections and production best practices.Knowledge of ship types such as research vessels, fishing vessels, icebreakers, and naval auxiliary vessels is a strong asset.Knowledge of icebreaker structures.Ability to work independently to develop solutions to sophisticated technical problems.Good analytical skills to capture and analyze data,



validating accuracy as part of the analysis process.Strong technical writing skills to produce clear, detailed technical specifications, procedures, and reports.Knowledge of MRP, purchasing and management systems is a plus.Proficiency with AutoCAD is required.Experience with CADMATIC and with icebreakers is an asset.Good organizational and communication skills (written, verbal, listening, and presentation).Willingness to travel as required to meet business needs.Commitment to safety and ability to follow safety laws and employer policies.Solid judgment and decision-making aligned with job functions.Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint).Why you’ll love working hereFull-time, permanent position with job stability on long-term shipbuilding projects.Competitive salary in line with experience, plus annual bonus and pension plan matching.Comprehensive health and wellness benefits package, including extended health care, dental, vision, life insurance, and more.Access to on-site facilities and employee support programs.Parking is included; transit options with a complimentary shuttle bus for North Vancouver locations.The estimated salary for this position is $105,300 - $128,700. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful candidate’s skills and experience as well as position location and internal equity.
