Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate in

Physical education certification (MB) - required

Health education certification (MC/MX)- recommended

JOB GOALS

Develop students' physical fitness, strength, movement skills, confidence, and lifelong wellness habits through high-quality strength and conditioning and physical education instruction.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Teaching students strategies and techniques to function in a secure and orderly classroom setting while adhering to the PBIS building/district models
2. Teaching students academic curricular standards approved by the Board of Education
3. Plans for daily literacy integration
4. Provides individual or small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of all students
5. Evaluates, using appropriate assessment practices, each pupil's growth in knowledge, skills, and attitudes in subjects being taught
6. Identifies pupils' needs, differentiates instruction, and cooperates with other skilled staff members to create a multi-tiered system of support
7. Participates in professional learning communities and professional development . Maintains professional competence through professional learning provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities
8. Maintains records of student data, sets individual goals, and adheres to grade level/building goals
9. Cooperates with school administration in providing displays and programs for the parents, school, and community, and when sponsoring activities
10. Communicates with parents and school personnel on classroom learning objectives and parent involvement activities as well as pupil progress
11. Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned workday
12. Participates in faculty meetings, committees, and sponsorship of student activities
13. Maintains and builds a positive school culture

Our district includes one Title I elementary school (K-5), the region's largest Title I middle school (grades 6-8), and the largest high school (grades 9-12) attached to a Career Center serving students in the Eastern Upper Peninsula. Our Title I Alternative High School provides a supportive environment for approximately 100 students, offering credit recovery and graduation options.

With a dedicated staff of 126 teachers, 200 support staff, and 11 administrators, we serve 1,710 students with a budget of over $30 million. Our students consistently score above state and national averages on standardized tests, and we meet or exceed all State Board Guidelines on curriculum, graduation requirements, class ratios, and scholastic eligibility.

We offer Advanced Placement courses in four disciplines and numerous opportunities for coursework at Lake Superior State University through Early/Middle College, dual enrollment, and concurrent enrollment programs. Our district is renowned for its professional learning opportunities, individual teacher coaches, and professional learning communities. New teachers receive strong mentorship and guidance, with efforts to qualify them for tuition or loan forgiveness.

Sault Area Schools is a leader in computer-aided instruction, with all classrooms equipped with instructional technology. The Career Center integrates technology into many career and technical programs, including business services and drafting and design with industry-standard CAD-CAM software. Students can choose from 13 in-house career-technical programs or additional off-campus specializations.

THE COMMUNITY

The Sault Ste. Marie Area Public School District is located at the northernmost end of I-75 on the Canadian border in the Eastern Upper Peninsula. With its proximity to Ontario and the rivers and lakes of the Upper Peninsula, the district is known as a vacation and sports person's paradise. Encompassing 314 square miles, the District is geographically one of the largest in Michigan. The twin cities of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario provide the urban hub for eastern Chippewa County and Northern Ontario.
