As a faith- and values-based organization, we hire and serve people of all backgrounds and walks of life - there is a place for everyone to belong here.Mission StatementThe Salvation Army exists to share the love of Jesus Christ, meet human needs and be a transforming influence in the communities of our world.Job DescriptionStatement of PurposeTo provide support & advocacy for residents in meeting goals and needsAccountable ToManager, Residential Programs(CIC - for program needs as required)QualificationsDevelopmental Services Worker diploma or other equivalent degree/diploma related to human services preferred6-12 months’ experience working with people who have developmental disabilities and/or mental health challengesExperience in individual program planning preferredValid Standard First Aid certificate (including CPR) & NVCI completed or must be acquired in first three monthsTraining and/or experience in medication administrationBehaviour management skillsAbility to work independently and as part of a team to provide a supportive and nurturing environmentComputer skills (MS Office, internet, learning management system, etc.)Training and/or experience in personal care (i.E., assisting with G-tube feedings, continence devices) is an assetTraining and/or experience in supporting individuals through ambulates, mobilizers, transfers are assetsValid driver’s license and French-language skills are assetsResponsibilitiesPROGRAMKnow and respond to the safety and health care needs of residentsAct as a role model for all residents as reflected by appearance,



behaviour and attitudeProvide support for residents’ personal development as decided through individual support planning (ISP)Advocating on residents’ behalf/facilitating self-advocacy to community supports in collaboration with colleagues and other healthcare professionalsEnsuring learning opportunities are provided utilizing agency and community resourcesFostering independence in residents including supervising and assisting residents with meal preparation and clean-up and other daily living skillsAdminister medication as prescribed and according to policies and proceduresSupport resident involvement in leisure activities (Christian education, bowling, special events, etc.)Complete/maintain resident records, shift reports and update communication bookFollow and promote the agency’s and site program goals and philosophyTrack, compile, analyze and make recommendations based on resident dataHOUSEHOLD ORGANIZATIONAdhere to site menu plan and food restrictionsEnsure the general site appearance is clean and tidy before the shift is completedMaintain and account for use of site and resident monies, TTC tokens, taxi chits and household supplies, etc.Complete daily household routines as required (cooking, groceries, laundry and cleaning, etc.)HEALTH & SAFETYComply with the provisions of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and regulationsAdhere to agency’s Health & Safety policies and programComplete daily walkthroughs/inspections of site as assignedReport/complete and forward maintenance requisition forms to main officeReport accidents/injuries/workplace hazards in a timely mannerResponsible use of agency’s vehicles, equipment and propertyFollow the principles of nonviolent crisis intervention philosophyPHYSICAL EFFORT/DEXTERITY REQUIRED : The performance of the job requires bending/ twisting/lifting of 50 lbs, considerable walking, standing, writing; computer work, and housekeeping.WORK SETTING : The incumbent’s work environment is typically in a group home facility. The incumbent works under generally agreeable conditions,



with the following exceptions:Exposure to dirt, bodily fluids, bodily wasteNoiseDealing with angry and abusive peopleVerbal abuseHandling garbageOdourExposure To HazardsThe incumbent may be exposed to risk of minor to moderate injury or illnesses due to the following:Physical attacks by others (i.E., being attacked by a resident)Exposure to infectious diseasesExposure to toxic chemicalsExposure to bodily fluidsSharp objectsOther dangerous situationsPrecautionary MeasuresThe incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to Health and Safety rules):Universal PrecautionsWHMIS TrainingFirst Aid/CPR certificationNon-Violent Crisis Intervention certificationPolice/Criminal Reference Check – Vulnerable Sector ScreeningOrganizationalAdhere to standards, policies, procedures, values and philosophy of The Salvation Army and Broadview VillageMaintain effective communicationParticipate in meetings and staff development training at discretion of Manager and AdministrationMake suggestions to improve efficiency, working conditions or procedures, as applicableRepresent the organization in a professional manner.Other duties as assigned.Note : The position of Residential Counsellor may also encompass the designation ofCounsellor-In-Charge (CIC)as described below:Designation: Counsellor-in-Charge (C.I.C.)Statement Of PurposeThe C.I.C. oversees program needs in the absence of the Residential Manager.ShiftDirect, delegate, coordinate, organize and ensure the completion of shift responsibilities. Ensure relevant information is communicated. In the event of staffing shortage, C.I.C. is responsible for the coverage of the succeeding shift until back-up staff can arrive. Ensure shift reports and program data are completed and incident reports are completed and forwarded to main office. Ensure emergency procedures are followed.CompensationThe target hiring range for this position is $23.67 to $25.78 with a maximum of $27.88.The Salvation Army will provide reasonable accommodation upon request.
