Position Details Zeeland Public Schools has a outstanding opportunity for a Director of Transportation working at our Transportation Building.

The Director of Transportation will enable each student, through safe and efficient transportation to take full advantage of the complete range of curricular and extra-curricular activities offered by the school district.

Responsibilities: Work as a liaison with state and local law enforcement, conform to all state laws and regulations regarding school transportation and submit reports required by state agencies.

Maintain safety standards in conformance with state, federal, local and insurance regulations and develop a program of preventative safety.

Complete and respond to insurance reports.

Recruit, train and supervise transportation department personnel and make recommendations for their employment, transfer, promotion and release.

Advise the Superintendent on road hazards for decision on school closing.

While maintaining normal routing, work in cooperation with school principals, athletic directors and other responsible for planning special school trips.

Develop with minimum staff a transportation program to meet the requirements of the daily instructional program and extracurricular activities.

Prepare and update bus routes and schedules for all schools in the district.

Attend appropriate meetings to gather information and give reports as needed.

Authorized purchases in accordance with budgetary limitations and district rules.

Approve and forward transportation service invoices to the accounting department.

Develop a plan for vehicle maintenance as well as preventative maintenance for district-owned vehicles.

Review and approve transportation personnel timesheets.





Take an active role in solving discipline problems occurring on school buses.

Act as liaison with parents for complaints and special requests.

Develop recommendations for future transportation needs based on annual student data.

Ensure that an appropriate supply of fuel and oil are available at all times.

Promote training opportunities for staff within the transportation department.

Develop safety regulations and promote safety practices for transportation personnel.

Recommend and maintain an adequate number of certified and qualified bus drivers.

Ensure that mechanics meet applicable state, federal and local requirements.

Develop, in cooperation with other school personnel, rules and procedures relating to the conduct of student riders, and enforce such policies, including communication with students, parents, and building administration.

Administer the employee handbook with transportation personnel.

Recommend a doctor to give required physicals to bus drivers, including administering an inclusive drug and alcohol program as mandated by law.

Develop a procedure that assures the prompt report of any bus accident to his/her supervisor and the districts insurance carrier.

Qualifications: Must be able to demonstrate aptitude and competence in area of pupil transportation, public relations and contractual implementation.

Must be knowledgeable about vehicle maintenance, experience in transportation management and budgeting, and capable of map reading, map construction, and routing.

Must have working knowledge of computers.

Previous administrative or leadership experience is preferred.
