Nootka Sound Service is looking for a Watchkeeping Mate to join the crew of the MV Uchuck III.

The Uchuck III is a working freight and passenger vessel that has been serving the communities, lodges, camps, and businesses of Nootka Sound, Esperanza Inlet, and Kyuquot Sound for decades. Based out of Gold River on Vancouver Island, we operate year-round, delivering cargo to remote coastal communities and welcoming visitors from around the world during the tourism season.

This is not a job where you’ll be doing the same thing every day. One day might involve loading freight, securing cargo, and helping unload at remote destinations. The next could involve assisting passengers as they explore one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in British Columbia.

As a member of our crew, you’ll be involved in all aspects of vessel operations, including:

- Safe operation of the vessel
- Cargo loading and unloading
- Vessel maintenance and upkeep
- Passenger interaction and customer service
- General deck and shipboard duties

The Uchuck is a 1942-built wooden vessel, and annual refit and drydock periods provide valuable hands-on experience that is increasingly difficult to find in today’s marine industry. The position offers steady, year-round employment and the opportunity to gain meaningful sea time while working in a unique coastal environment.

Our winter schedule is typically four 10-hour days per week,



increasing to five to six days per week during the tourism season.

Qualifications

Required:

- Canadian Watchkeeping Mate Certificate (Chief Mate 500GT minimum)
- Ability to relocate to or reliably commute to Gold River, BC
- Strong work ethic and willingness to be part of a team
