Job Overview:
The Advisor, Capital Assets is a senior-level individual contributor responsible for supporting the accounting, reporting, and financial management of capital projects and capital assets. This role plays a critical part in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of capital expenditures, construction work in progress (CWIP), fixed asset balances, and related financial reporting.
The successful candidate will serve as a trusted accounting advisor, partnering closely with Capital Management, Fixed Assets, Financial Reporting, FP&A;, Regulatory, Tax, and project teams to support month-end close activities, complex accounting analyses, audit requirements, and continuous process improvement initiatives. This position requires a highly analytical and detail-oriented professional who can independently research accounting issues, resolve complex transactions, strengthen controls, and provide technical guidance to accounting team members.
The role offers a unique combination of project accounting and capital asset accounting responsibilities, including support for capitalization activities, cost transfers, AFUDC/IDC accounting, asset unitization, depreciation, retirements, and balance remediation initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform and support month-end and year-end close activities related to capital projects, construction work in progress (CWIP), and capital assets.
Prepare, review, and analyze journal entries, accruals, account reconciliations, cost transfers, and supporting schedules.
Support project accounting activities including project setup, cost monitoring, capitalization readiness assessments, and project closeout processes.
Analyze and resolve complex accounting issues, transaction exceptions, balance discrepancies, and reporting variances.
Prepare recurring and ad hoc financial reports related to capital expenditures, CWIP balances, capital asset activity, and project performance.
Support AFUDC/IDC calculations and ensure accurate accounting treatment in accordance with applicable policies and regulatory requirements.
Assist with cost allocation, project cost transfer, and capitalization processes.
Partner with project managers, finance teams,
and business stakeholders to ensure costs are appropriately tracked, reviewed, and capitalized.
Support internal and external audit requests by preparing documentation, responding to inquiries, and participating in walkthroughs and testing activities.
Ensure compliance with SOX requirements, internal controls, accounting policies, and established financial reporting standards.
Develop, maintain, and enhance Record-to-Report (RTR) process documentation, standard operating procedures, process narratives, and control documentation.
Participate in balance remediation projects, fixed asset cleanup initiatives, and capital accounting improvement efforts.
Identify opportunities to streamline processes, improve reporting accuracy, enhance controls, and increase operational efficiency.
Provide technical accounting guidance, coaching, and review support to analysts and junior team members.
Collaborate cross-functionally with Accounting, Capital Management, Fixed Assets, Financial Reporting, Regulatory, Tax, FP&A;, and operational teams to support business objectives and financial reporting requirements.
Contribute to system implementations, process enhancements, and continuous improvement initiatives related to capital accounting and financial operations.
Qualifications:
Required:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience with increasing responsibility.
Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, and month-end close processes.
Experience in project accounting, capital accounting, fixed asset accounting, construction accounting, or a related capital-intensive environment.
Demonstrated ability to analyze complex accounting transactions and resolve issues independently.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including complex formulas, data analysis, and financial modeling techniques.
Experience working with large ERP systems such as SAP, Oracle, or comparable enterprise platforms.
Ability to research accounting issues, interpret accounting guidance,
and develop practical recommendations.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively engage stakeholders at multiple levels.
Proven ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, and perform effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Robust attention to detail and commitment to accuracy, compliance, and continuous improvement.
Preferred:
CPA designation or active pursuit of CPA certification.
Experience within the utility, energy, infrastructure, construction, or other capital-intensive industries.
Experience supporting capital project accounting and Construction Work in Progress (CWIP) accounting.
Knowledge of capitalization policies, project cost transfers, capital accruals, AFUDC/IDC accounting, and capital reporting processes.
Experience supporting external audits, SOX compliance initiatives, internal control programs, and audit testing activities.
Experience creating and maintaining accounting process documentation, narratives, flowcharts, and walkthrough materials.
Demonstrated success leading or contributing to process improvement and operational excellence initiatives.
Experience coaching, mentoring, or providing technical oversight to junior accounting professionals.
