Wihnemne (Weh-nem-nay) School, located on the Paul First Nation (west of Edmonton close to Duffield), is looking for a full time grade 2 teacher dedicated to providing a quality instruction and education to students in our elementary department. Teaching responsibilities include (and are not limited to) the common core subjects (ELA, Math, Social Studies, Science and Health).
This position will be until June 29, 2026 with an opportunity to continue.
Wihnemne School has a high focus in literacy development, strength in this area will be appreciated but also developed and supported. (UFLI, Heggerty, Words their Way)
Wihnemne School currently has a full-time Physical Education teacher, an Elder in Residence, a land-based teachings component, Stoney and Cree language instruction and prides itself on including cultural knowledge within the curriculum as well as providing cultural experiences.
Teacher Responsibilities:
- maintain a safe and healthy learning environment for the students.
- promote continued learning.
- follow lesson plans and schedule in accordance with the Alberta Education Programs of Study and create unit plans and long-range plans.
- ensure that the classroom is running smoothly.
- adhere to the roles and responsibilities as any other classroom teacher as defined by the Education Act and the Teaching Profession Act.
- Take an active learning approach and appreciation of Indigenous/First Nations Culture and customs.
Additional responsibilities may include:
- preparing educational materials
- educational assessments
- assigning homework
- working on school committees (examples include feasts (luncheons, elder teas, girls/boys group, sports teams, yearbook)
- paticipation in a monthly school newsletter
- morning, bus, recess, lunch or after school supervision duties
- Attending cultural events or field trips
- Participating in local events to learn about the culture and traditions.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Valid Alberta Teaching certification (required)
- Transparent Criminal Records Check, to include the Vulnerable Sector Check
- Child Intervention Check completed by Child and Family Services

- Strong instruction and classroom management skills
- Solid communication and organizational skills
- Personal integrity and trustworthiness
- Ability to establish trust and rapport with students, co-workers and community.
- Competency working with computers and other technologies to support student learning
- Respect and value all individuals with sensitivity to diversity
