About Us
Avion Technologies Inc. specializes in precision contract manufacturing for the aerospace, defence, and nuclear sectors—industries where quality, reliability, and compliance are non-negotiable. Avion is a trusted partner delivering mission-critical solutions to some of the most demanding applications in the world.
Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and technically strong Technical Cost Estimator / Planning Engineer to join our advanced aerospace manufacturing team. In this role you will be the bridge between engineering, operations, and supply chain — translating complex machining requirements into accurate cost estimates and production plans that keep programmes on schedule and on budget.
You will work directly with suppliers, tooling specialists, and internal stakeholders to develop competitive, realistic quotes while identifying the most efficient processing strategies for precision aerospace components.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop detailed cost estimates for CNC machined components from engineering drawings and 3D models
- Define manufacturing process plans including operation sequences, cycle times, and machine routing
- Source and negotiate material quotes with approved suppliers
- Collect and benchmark processing costs across internal and external operations
- Engage tooling specialists to identify optimal cutting tools and strategies for each part
- Coordinate NDT, plating, heat treatment, and special-process requirements with certified vendors
- Liaise with engineering on DFM (design for manufacturability) improvements
- Track and follow up on open RFQs, purchase orders, and supplier commitments
- Maintain and update estimating databases and cost models
- Manage end-to-end customer purchase order intake, including contract review, documentation receipt, kickoff meeting facilitation, and ERP system entry
- Maintain accurate and current purchase order data within the ERP system, ensuring exact alignment between customer orders and production/planning schedules
- Support programme reviews with accurate cost and schedule data
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering (or equivalent experience)
- Hands-on knowledge of CNC machining processes (milling, turning, gear cutting, EDM)
- Familiarity with NDT methods (dye penetrant, magnetic particle, ultrasonic)
- Understanding of surface treatments: anodizing, CAD, chrome, Shot peen, primer
- Experience reading and interpreting GD&T; engineering drawings
- Prior involvement in supplier quoting and procurement
- Strong numerical and analytical skills for cost modelling
- Advanced proficiency with MS Excel
What we're looking for
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Highly organised with strong follow-through on open actions
- Self-driven and able to manage multiple concurrent estimates
- Cooperative approach with shop floor, engineering, and commercial teams
- Comfortable working to tight programme deadlines

Application question(s):
- Walk me through how you would estimate the cycle time for a 5-axis milled aluminum bracket with tight GD&T; tolerances. What inputs do you need and what assumptions do you make?
- What CNC operations do you consider non-standard, and how do you handle them when building a quote?
- You sent RFQs to three material suppliers two weeks ago and have heard back from only one. The quote is due in three days. What do you do?
- How do you ensure the processing costs you collect from suppliers (plating, NDT, heat treat) are realistic and not just placeholder numbers?
Education:
- Bachelor's Degree (preferred)
Experience:
- CNC Machining Processes: 1 year (required)
