Job Purpose:
The Shop Team Lead helps keep daily fabrication work running safely, efficiently, and on schedule. This is a hands-on role — the Team Lead works alongside another Team Lead and the team while guiding daily tasks, supporting new employees, and flagging issues to the Shop Supervisor/PM. Strong focus on Health & Safety and leading by example.

Key Responsibilities

Production & Scheduling

· Help coordinate daily labour assignments under direction from the Supervisor.

· Confirm employees have drawings, materials, and tools before starting work.

· Monitor progress on assigned jobs and flag delays to the Supervisor.

· Support job setup and basic troubleshooting.

Labour & Productivity

· Confirm timesheets are accurate before submitting to Supervisor for approval.

· Help track labour hours against job numbers.

· Flag productivity issues to the Supervisor.

Leadership

· Mentor and support welders, fitters, apprentices, and labourers on the floor.

· Model accountability, teamwork, and professional conduct.

· Provide informal coaching and day-to-day guidance.

· Assist with onboarding and training of new employees.





· Report performance or conduct concerns to the Supervisor (no disciplinary authority).

Quality Control

· Review drawings with employees before work begins.

· Conduct spot-checks/in-process inspections.

· Confirm welding procedures are being followed.

· Flag quality issues or rework to the Supervisor.

Health & Safety

· Reinforce safety policies and PPE use on the floor.

· Participate in daily safety discussions.

· Report unsafe conditions immediately.

Material & Shop Organization

· Help organize materials and job allocation in the shop.

· Support shipping prep (confirming components/documentation are ready).

· Maintain a clean, organized work area.

Equipment

· Complete equipment inspections as assigned.

· Report maintenance/repair needs to the Supervisor.

Qualifications

· Minimum 5 years of fabrication and welding experience.

· Some informal leadership or mentoring experience an asset.

· Ability to read fabrication drawings.

· Working knowledge of Ontario H&S; basics.

· Experience with GTAW, GMAW, FCAW, SMAW, plasma/oxy-fuel cutting.

· Good communication and team skills.

· Dependable, solution-oriented, comfortable working hands-on with the team.
