Boat Operator

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Boat Operator will be responsible for the secure operation, navigation, and maintenance of vessels used for community programs, environmental monitoring, fisheries, cultural, and land-based activities. The position supports the Nation’s stewardship, resource management, and marine transportation needs while ensuring adherence to all relevant safety, environmental, and operational standards.

REPORTS TO: Forester

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Safely operate Nation-owned vessels for community, fisheries, cultural, and stewardship activities
- Conduct regular vessel inspections and basic maintenance to ensure operational readiness
- Maintain accurate logs of trips, fuel usage, maintenance, and safety checks
- Navigate safely in coastal and inland waterways using charts, GPS, and local knowledge
- Assist with loading and unloading gear, equipment, and passengers
- Ensure compliance with Transport Canada safety requirements and Nation policies
- Support environmental and cultural monitoring projects on the water
- Work collaboratively with Nation staff, Elders, and community members
- Represent the Nation in a professional and respectful manner when interacting with partner agencies and the public
- Other duties as assigned

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

- Proven experience operating small vessels safely and efficiently in the marine environment




- Ability to work in challenging marine environments and remote settings
- Familiarity with marine navigation, weather interpretation, and safety procedures
- Basic mechanical knowledge for troubleshooting vessel or equipment issues
- Effective communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to follow direction and work independently when required
- Commitment to safety and environmental stewardship

EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS:

- Grade 12 or equivalent
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence
- Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP)
- Familiarity with local coastlines and marine environments
- Small Domestic Vessel Basic Safety (SDV-BS)
- Restricted Operator’s Certificate (Maritime) with DSC endorsement
- Basic Marine First Aid
- Experience with marine fieldwork or environmental monitoring
- Knowledge of First Nation protocols and coastal practices

UNUSUAL JOB FEATURES:

- Work in variable and often adverse weather conditions
- Irregular hours, including weekends and overnight trips
- Extensive outdoor work and travel by vessel and truck/ferry
- Physically demanding work including lifting, loading, and extended periods at sea
