Role Description The Assistant Manager is a full-time, on-site role based at McMaster University in Hamilton, ON. This position supports the daily operations of a specific department or unit, including overseeing workflow, coordinating schedules, and monitoring progress toward operational goals. The Assistant Manager helps supervise staff, provides guidance on policies and procedures, and assists with performance feedback and training.
The role includes collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, preparing reports, maintaining records, and contributing to process improvements. The Assistant Manager also assists with budgeting, resource allocation, and compliance with institutional standards, while supporting a positive, inclusive, and student-centered environment.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated leadership and supervisory abilities, with experience coordinating teams, delegating tasks, and supporting staff development.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills,
including the ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain accurate documentation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with students, staff, faculty, and external partners.
- Proficiency with office software and digital tools (e.g., spreadsheets, databases, collaboration platforms) and comfort learning new systems.
- Problem-solving and analytical skills, with the capacity to interpret data, identify operational issues, and recommend effective solutions.
- Commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility, and to fostering a respectful, cooperative workplace culture.
- Post-secondary education in business administration, management, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Experience in a higher education or large organizational setting is an asset, along with familiarity with institutional policies and procedures.
