The Alberta Underwater Council is seeking a collaborative, community focused leader to be their next Executive Director. The successful candidate will be an engaging, inclusive, approachable leader with good listening and communication skills. A great team leader, the candidate will work well with others, respecting their views and supporting volunteers.
Positive and encouraging, the candidate will have an open and flexible style and commitment to nurturing a positive work culture. They will be good at problem solving and able to make sound decisions that generate unified support from diverse groups of stakeholders.
They will be a confident leader who can network and speak publicly about The Alberta Underwater Council in a business environment yet still be able to engage with participants on a meaningful level. An accomplished relationship builder, the candidate will be able to participate in positive ways in community initiatives to support awareness and safety of underwater activities available while seeking to preserve the aquatic setting. They will have the skills to raise significant support to fund our mission and will strategically engage with the community for greater awareness and stronger partnerships to ensure The Alberta Underwater Council thrives into the future, reaching and serving the underwater community.
The ideal candidate will have experience or training supporting and partnering with a nonprofit Board of Directors in its governance duties and working with an engaged, passionate volunteers. The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of non-profit finances, including project-based funding, grant applications, reporting and their implications.
General The Executive Director is a proactive individual in charge of the day-to-day operations of the Alberta Underwater Council. The Executive Director takes an active part in the development and implementation of short- and long-term planning for the Council and assists the Board in determining ongoing objectives and policies necessary for the furtherance of those plans.
Job Responsibilities
Membership
-Maintain the Council’s membership records in a timely manner;
-Assist the Board and Executive Committee in planning ideas aimed at maintaining and growing the current membership of the Council, including suggestions on enhanced membership benefits, improved membership feedback, etc.; and
- Serve as primary contact between the Council and its membership on a day-to-day basis and as a resource person (either directly or through referrals) on matters related to scuba diving, underwater sports and the Council’s efforts to promote public safety, awareness, protection and enhancement of the underwater environment.
Communications -Organize, edit and distribute newsletters (Underwater Alberta), monthly eNEWS, social media (Facebook) including contribution of relevant materials, soliciting of advertisers and information from within dive industry;
- Organize and distribute any other notices necessary to further the goals and objectives of the Council and, where appropriate, its member organizations;
-Maintain and develop on ongoing basis the Council website either independently or in cooperation with designated web site personnel
Non Profit Funding Grants
-Maintain all records and documentation related to funds and proceeds, including preparation and filing of all documentation and filings for reporting
-Researching and completion of grants and sponsorship applications on behalf of the Council and, where appropriate and approved by the Board and/or Executive Committee, its member clubs
Event Organization
-Assist in organization,
application of special permits and communication of Council and member group events throughout the year;
-Ensure notification of events is distributed to the membership and public in a timely and cost-effective manner;
- Attend events and help with registration, waivers, membership sales, raffles, etc.
Office and Administration -Serve as primary contact between the Council, its membership and the public;
-Assist Outreach Program personnel in advertising, scheduling, and organization and follow up related to the Council’s Underwater Outreach Program(s).
-Accounting; maintain the financials and expenses of the council including funding allocations with the assistance of the treasurer.
Supervisor The Executive Director reports to the Board of the Council. Direct supervision may be undertaken by one or more members of the Board (usually the President) as required.

Other Assets As the position deals with underwater sports, including scuba diving and underwater hockey, and the advancement of those sports and the underwater environment in Alberta, a well founded understanding of these sports and the industry is important.

Compensation
Flexible Part time: 20-35 hrs/week depending on tasks
Pay is Hourly: $25/hr
