INTERMEDIATE ELECTRICAL SUBSTATION ENGINEER Location: Calgary, Alberta Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent Are you a professional electrical engineer with a passion for high-voltage substation design?

Inc. is seeking an Intermediate Electrical Substation Engineer to support the design and execution of utility, renewable energy, power generation, and industrial substation projects across Western Canada.
About the Role This position involves contributing to the physical design of greenfield and brownfield substations, including equipment arrangements, grounding, lightning protection, bus and conductor selection, cable routing, station service, and major-equipment engineering. The role spans concept development and FEED through detailed design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and closeout. In this role, you’ll collaborate with senior engineers, protection and controls specialists, civil and structural teams, project managers, clients, and equipment vendors to deliver safe, reliable, and constructible substation solutions.

Key Responsibilities Substation Physical Design Develop and review single-line diagrams, general arrangements, plans, sections, elevations, equipment layouts, cable and conduit routing, cable-trench layouts, and yard-lighting designs.
Perform or support calculations for bus and conductor ampacity, electrical clearances, grounding, lightning shielding, insulation coordination, cable ampacity, and auxiliary systems.
Prepare grounding and lightning-protection designs in accordance with applicable IEEE, CSA, utility, and client requirements.
Coordinate with power-systems and protection-and-controls engineers and apply approved load-flow, short-circuit, arc-flash, protection-coordination, grounding, and insulation-coordination study outputs to equipment ratings, physical layouts, clearances, grounding systems, cable systems, and auxiliary-system design under senior review.
Equipment
Engineering and Procurement Prepare specifications and data sheets for power transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, instrument transformers, surge arresters, GIS or AIS equipment, bus systems, and auxiliary equipment.
Support cost estimating, technical bid evaluations, vendor-document review, technical recommendations, and factory acceptance testing.
Coordinate vendor interfaces and confirm equipment ratings, clearances, terminations,
foundations, and constructability requirements.
Project
Execution and Coordination Prepare design bases, engineering design standards, bills of materials, material take-offs, scopes of work, construction binders, and issued-for-construction packages.
Coordinate physical design with power-systems, protection and controls, SCADA and telecommunications, civil, structural, and project-management disciplines.
Coordinate electrical requirements and interfaces for equipment foundations, transformer oil containment, grading and drainage, roads, fencing, control buildings and E-houses, cable trenches, underground services, structural steel, and grounding connections.
Participate in client and vendor meetings, track assigned scope, schedule, and budget, and resolve technical issues in a timely manner. Field and Commissioning Support Provide technical support during procurement, construction, testing, commissioning, and energization, including responses to RFIs and evaluation of field changes.
Conduct site inspections, support existing-condition assessments, and prepare record drawings, as-built documentation, and closeout packages. Quality, Safety, and Development Ensure designs comply with the Canadian Electrical Code where applicable; relevant CSA C22.3, IEEE, IEC, and ANSI standards; applicable provincial, utility, client, and interconnection requirements; and Juno’s engineering quality-management system.
Apply safety-in-design and constructability principles and contribute to technical reviews, internal standards, and the development of junior team members.
Qualifications Education and Licensure Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
Registered Qualified Engineer (P.Eng.) in Alberta or another Canadian province and eligible for registration with APEGA.
Experience Typically 5 to 9 years of progressive electrical engineering experience, including utility or industrial substation physical design. Candidates with equivalent demonstrated competency may also be considered.
Experience with greenfield or brownfield substations and project stages from FEED through detailed design and field support.
Demonstrated capability in preparing coordinated design deliverables and working with clients, utilities, vendors, and multidisciplinary teams.
Technical Skills
Working knowledge of medium- and high-voltage substation equipment, electrical clearances, grounding, lightning protection, bus and conductor design, cable systems, and AC or DC auxiliary systems.
Experience with CDEGS, CYMCAP, ETAP, SKM, or equivalent engineering software is an asset.
Strong proficiency with Bluebeam and Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
Desirable Assets
Experience applying Western Canadian utility standards and supporting utility review and approval processes.
Experience with transmission-connected generation, renewable energy, battery energy storage, GIS, or major-transformer procurement.
Field, construction, commissioning, energization, or factory-acceptance-testing experience. Success in This Role Will Require Strong analytical skills and disciplined attention to electrical safety, clearances, and constructability.
Excellent communication, calculation, drawing-review, and technical-documentation abilities.
Ability to manage assigned scope, schedule, budget, and competing project priorities.

Applicants must be able to work full-time in Canada and be available for occasional multi-day travel to substations, vendor facilities, and project sites across Western Canada.
