Job Purpose:
Reporting to the Café Manager, the Part-Time Lead Barista is responsible for delivering exceptional customer service, preparing high-quality beverages and food items, and providing day-to-day leadership to a team of student employees. This role serves as a key support to the Café Manager by helping coordinate daily operations, training staff, maintaining service standards, and ensuring a welcoming café workplace.

Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provide day-to-day guidance, coaching, and support for barista’s during shifts.
- Assist with onboarding and training recent team members.
- Promote a positive, inclusive, and collaborative work environment.
- Help ensure staff follow café procedures, service standards, and health and safety requirements.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for staff when the Café Manager is not on-site.
- Support employee development by providing feedback and encouraging continuous improvement.
- Prepare and serve specialty coffee, espresso beverages, tea, and other menu items according to established standards.
- Ensure efficient workflow and excellent customer service during busy periods.
- Monitor product quality, presentation, and consistency.
- Assist with opening and closing procedures.
- Support inventory management by monitoring stock levels and notifying the Café Manager of ordering needs.
- Help maintain cleanliness, organization, and food safety standards throughout the café.
- Deliver friendly, professional, and personalized customer service.
- Address customer concerns and resolve issues in a timely and positive manner.
- Foster a welcoming atmosphere for students, staff, faculty, and visitors.
- Act as a role model for exceptional hospitality and service.
- Administrative & Managerial Support
- Assist the Café Manager with scheduling, shift coverage coordination, and daily operational planning.
- Support implementation of promotions, events, and café initiatives.
- Communicate operational updates, staff concerns, and customer feedback to the Café Manager.
- Help ensure compliance with workplace policies, health regulations, and safety procedures.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Café Manager.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in a café, coffee shop, food service, or hospitality environment.
- Previous customer service or food service experience – quick service restaurant preferred.
- High school diploma is required. College diploma in Hospitality or a related field is an advantage.
- Experience using a POS system is an advantage.
- Food Handling and Food Safety certification is required.
- Demonstrated leadership, supervisory, or team lead experience.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to multitask and remain organized in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions during shifts.
- Reliable, punctual, and professional.
- Experience training or mentoring staff.
- Knowledge of espresso preparation and specialty coffee beverages.
- Experience working with student employees or young team members.
- Ability to stand for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs (11 kg).
- Ability to perform repetitive tasks such as operating espresso equipment and preparing beverages.
