Duties
Nurses in Charge deliver comprehensive and community health nursing services within remote and/or isolated First Nations communities in Alberta. They provide in‑depth nursing knowledge, skills, clinical expertise and advanced judgment through consultation, clinical practice, leadership, and facilitate knowledge transfer through health promotion and disease prevention. The intent of this process is to staff one position on a temporary basis for approximately two years in Chateh, Alberta. A pool of qualified or partially assessed candidates may be established and used to staff identical or similar positions at this group and level with various conditions of employment, tenures (acting, assignment/secondment, deployment, term and/or indeterminate), and in various locations.

- Medical clearance: Pre‑placement Category 3 health evaluation.
- Medical clearance: Periodic Category 3 health evaluation according to the schedule outlined in Section I of the Occupational Health Evaluation Standard for “ISC Nurses Assigned to Isolated Posts in Northern First Nations Communities.” - This position requires a successful pre‑placement Category‑3 health evaluation. Exceptionally, due to urgent staffing needs, a temporary pre‑placement Category 1 personal health declaration evaluation may be accepted. In this case, employees will be asked to complete a Category 3 Health Evaluation within twelve (12) months of hire to ensure compliance with the Occupational Health Evaluation Standard.
- Willingness and ability to travel in small aircraft, off‑road vehicles and by boat in varied weather conditions to communities in remote and isolated areas.
- Willingness and ability to be temporarily reassigned to other communities as operationally required.
- Willingness and ability to perform on‑call duties, work after hours, and on weekends as required.
- Willingness and ability to complete mandatory education/training relevant to the position, including cultural learning and nursing in‑services required for the role.
- Current valid registration as a Registered Nurse and a member in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta. You need (essential for the job) Your application must clearly explain how you meet the following.
- OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION: Eligibility for registration as a registered nurse in a province or territory of Canada.
- EXPERIENCE: Experience as a Registered Nurse in leadership roles (such as leading a multidisciplinary team, managing a program, leading a nursing unit and/or medical clinic).
Recent and significant experience as a Registered Nurse in Public Health Nursing, including but not limited to postpartum newborn‑maternal health, school programs, sexual health programming, and well‑child clinic.

Education Graduation with a degree from a recognized post‑secondary institution with acceptable specialization in nursing, nursing service administration, nursing education or some other specialty relevant to the position. Candidates with foreign credentials must provide proof of Canadian equivalency. Consult the Canadian Information Centre for International Credentials or Alliance of Credential Evaluation Services of Canada (ACESC).
Experience Recent and significant experience as a Registered Nurse in one or more of the following areas:
- Prenatal, obstetrics, postpartum nursing - Substance use and harm reduction programming - Pediatrics - Experience working in an Indigenous Community in a health‑care delivery role.
- Proficiency in speaking a First Nations’ language.
- Experience working with Indigenous people or organizations.
- Experience working in rural, remote or isolated locations.
