About the Role
Reporting within the Nutrition Patient Services team, the Nutrition Assistant supports the preparation, assembly, delivery, and distribution of meals and nutritional products throughout the hospital. You will play a key role in maintaining food safety, quality standards, and sanitation practices while helping patients receive the nutrition they need during their care journey. As a member of the KHSC team, you will actively support our commitment to patient- and family-centred care and contribute to creating a positive healthcare experience for every patient we serve.
What You'll Do
As a Nutrition Assistant, your responsibilities will include:
Patient Meal Services
- Obtain patient meal selections and assist patients with menu choices.
- Assemble meal trays accurately according to patient requirements.
- Re-thermalize meals and ensure food is prepared and served at appropriate temperatures.
- Deliver meals, snacks, and nutritional products directly to patients.
- Retrieve meal trays and related food service items.
Food Preparation
- Portion food items according to production requirements.
- Prepare sandwiches, salads, cold plates, and texture-modified foods and fluids.
- Prepare specialized tube feedings and nutritional formulas.
Inventory & Supply Management
- Receive, store, rotate, and monitor food inventory.
- Assemble requisitions for hospital departments.
- Monitor inventory levels and communicate shortages or quality concerns to supervisors.
- Prepare frozen products for tempering according to established procedures.
Sanitation & Safety
- Clean and sanitize food preparation and service areas.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, scrub, and maintain department workspaces.
- Remove and dispose of food waste, recyclables, and other department waste.
- Follow all food safety, quality assurance, sanitation, WHMIS, and infection prevention procedures.
Teamwork & Customer Service
- Communicate effectively with patients, nursing units, and hospital staff.
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
- Support a respectful, safe, and cooperative work environment.
- Adhere to all Occupational Health & Safety and hospital policies.
What You'll Bring
Required Qualifications
- Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.
- Current Food Handler Certificate (must be maintained throughout employment).
- Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
- Strong communication and customer service skills with a polite and professional approach.
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
- Recent experience in hospital food service, food service, or customer service.
- Demonstrated reliability and regular attendance.
- Successful completion of a Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Search.
