ACC-Lakeside proudly stands as the largest intensive cattle feeding operation in Alberta, providing daily nourishment to up to 75,000 head of beef cattle. We are looking for enthusiastic and committed individuals to join our Pen Rider crew, a vital team responsible for the well-being of our cattle and the smooth operation of our facility year-round. Ideal candidates will possess a genuine passion for animal husbandry, complemented by hands-on knowledge and experience with cattle handling and horseback riding.
By becoming a part of our team, you will play a crucial role in maintaining the health and productivity of our herd while fostering a positive work workplace.
Responsibilities
· Utilizes a horse to ride through assigned pens daily and identify sick animals by observing outward signs of distress; segregates sick cattle for treatment by driving them to the nearest hospital pen.
· Assists in shipment of fat cattle by opening gates, driving cattle to shipping areas for weighing; counting cattle and separating strays; checking withdrawals.
· Moves/drives cattle from one area of the yard to another by utilizing humane low-stress techniques, including slow movement of cattle.
· Returns treated cattle to home pens from hospitals.
· Returns stray animals to home pens.
· Rides horse safely by awareness of surroundings and exercise of caution in all situations.
· Maintains cleanliness of horse facilities by sweeping floor and cleaning stalls.
· Reports observed pen maintenance issues to appropriate yard employees for repair (broken water tanks, bunks, holes, etc.).
· Alerts supervisor to possible problem pens through observance of unusual trends (including concerns about feed, conditions of cattle received, etc.).
· Comply with all applicable safety rules and policies.
· Assist other areas of the Cattle Department when needed.
Qualifications
· Ability to ride a horse in a safe manner.
· Ability to take care of horses and tack.
· Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10s and 100s. Ability to apply these functions using units and weights.
· Knowledge of cattle diseases and lameness.
· Flexibility to work varied hours should shipping necessitate it.
- Proficient in the use of Computers and MS Office programs such as Outlook, Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.
- The ability to work independently as well as part of a team
- Excellent skills in all forms of communication
- The desire to progress, learn, grow, and succeed
Located just minutes outside of the City of Brooks, Alberta, ACC Lakeside is the largest single commercial cattle feedlot operation in Canada, and we pride ourselves on providing a safe environment with continuous development and improvement.
