Position Details The Faculty of Fine Arts invites applications for a skilled and creative Photo Technician to support the Photography program and studio operations in the Department of Art. The position is a part time, recurring-term position working approximately 18 hours per week, 8 months of the year from approximately September 1 – April 30. This role supports both analogue (film and darkroom) and digital photography processes, ensuring students have access to safe, well-maintained, and inspiring learning environments.

The successful candidate will work closely with students and faculty to maintain studio spaces, demonstrate technical processes, and keep the facilities and equipment in top condition.

Reporting to the Head Art Technician with direction by the Photography Workshop Coordinator and working closely with faculty and students, the Photo Technician provides hands-on technical assistance, demonstrations, conducts class-based workshops, and mentorship to students developing skills across film, digital imaging, and studio lighting. On a case-by-case basis, the Photo Technician may be cross-trained to provide guidance, support,



and demonstrations in other shops and studio as well.

By maintaining equipment, supplies, and safety standards, the Photo Technician plays a key role in fostering an accessible, well-organized, and inspiring learning environment that supports high-quality artistic production and experiential education in the Faculty of Fine Arts.

Working Conditions

- Occasional evening and weekend work is required to support classes and open lab sessions.
- The position involves physical activity, including lifting up to 50 lbs, standing for long periods, and handling equipment and materials.
- Regular work in darkroom and wet-room environments with photographic chemicals is required.
- Safety equipment and appropriate training are provided.

Position Qualifications

- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Photography, or a closely related discipline
- 2 or more years experience working in art studios and with analogue and digital photography. Preferred experience in post-secondary art studios and with analogue and digital photography.
- WHMIS and First Aid certified
- Strong working knowledge of both analogue (film/darkroom) and digital (scanning, editing, printing) photography processes.
- Proficiency in photo-editing and workflow software (Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Capture One, etc.).
- Experience with studio lighting systems and photographic equipment maintenance.
- Familiarity with chemical safety standards (WHMIS or equivalent) and best practices for lab environments.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for mentoring and supporting students.
- Strong organizational ability and attention to detail in maintaining inventories and documentation.

Starting Salary Range (at 1.0 FTE) $5,000.00 - $5,589.00 monthly

Full Salary Range (at 1.0 FTE)

$5,000.00 - $6,177.00 monthly (AUPE - Grade 9)
