QA/QC Inspector

Location: Ontario, Canada

Contract Type: Contract

Industry: Mining / Heavy Industrial Construction

Work Arrangement: Site and Fabrication Shop Visits

Overview An opportunity is available for an experienced QA/QC Inspector to support the fabrication and quality assurance of structural steel, mechanical, and piping packages for a major industrial construction project in Ontario.

The successful candidate will oversee fabrication quality, welding inspections, non-destructive testing, coating inspections, and supplier compliance to ensure all manufactured components meet project specifications, quality standards, and delivery requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Quality Assurance & Inspection

- Oversee QA/QC activities for structural steel, mechanical, piping, and fabricated equipment packages
- Monitor fabrication processes to ensure compliance with approved project specifications, Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), and quality procedures
- Review and approve Inspection and Test Plans, welding procedures, and welder qualification records
- Verify material traceability, material certificates, and compliance with approved project requirements
- Perform inspections of steel fabrication, fit-up, dimensional accuracy, and final assembly

Welding & NDT Inspection
- Conduct 100% visual inspection of critical and non-critical welds
- Witness and review Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) activities including:
- Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
- Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
- Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT)
- Radiographic Testing (RT), where applicable

- Monitor welding quality and ensure compliance with approved welding procedures and applicable standards

Coating & Surface Protection
- Witness and verify protective coating inspections and testing
- Inspect dry film thickness (DFT), wet film thickness (WFT), adhesion testing, holiday testing, and surface profile measurements




- Ensure painting and coating systems comply with project specifications

Fabrication Surveillance
- Attend fabrication workshops to witness trial assemblies and equipment fit-up
- Identify quality issues and manage punch list items through to completion
- Verify fabrication activities are carried out in accordance with approved fabrication management plans
- Inspect packaging and preservation of completed steelwork prior to shipment
- Review packing lists and issue release certificates once quality requirements have been met

Quality Documentation
- Identify non-conformances and prepare Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs)
- Monitor corrective actions and verify close-out of quality issues
- Prepare detailed inspection reports with photographic evidence following each inspection visit
- Communicate inspection findings promptly to suppliers and project teams
- Monitor fabrication progress and report schedule risks or potential delays

Health & Safety
- Verify contractor compliance with health and safety requirements
- Participate in safety inspections and witness Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and Safe Work Procedures (SWPs)
- Promote safe working practices throughout fabrication and inspection activities

Stakeholder Coordination
- Coordinate inspections with suppliers, fabrication facilities, project teams, and third-party inspectors
- Facilitate remote inspections and virtual witnessing where required




- Maintain effective communication with project stakeholders throughout fabrication and delivery

Requirements
- Technical qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Welding, Materials Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience
- Proven experience as a QA/QC Inspector within heavy industrial, mining, oil and gas, steel fabrication, or EPC projects
- Strong knowledge of structural steel fabrication, piping, mechanical equipment, and welding inspection
- Experience reviewing Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), welding procedures, and quality documentation
- Practical experience with visual welding inspection and NDT techniques including MT, UT, PT, and RT
- Experience inspecting protective coating systems and associated testing methods
- Solid understanding of fabrication quality management systems and inspection processes
- Excellent report writing, communication, and organisational skills
- Ability to work independently while coordinating effectively with suppliers, contractors, and project teams

Preferred Qualifications
- CSWIP Welding Inspector or equivalent certification
- NDT Level II certification in one or more inspection methods
- Protective coating inspection certification (e.g. NACE or AMPP, FROSIO, or equivalent)
- Experience supporting mining, mineral processing, or heavy industrial construction projects
- Familiarity with Canadian welding and fabrication standards

- Contract position based in Ontario, Canada
- Regular travel to fabrication workshops and supplier facilities will be required
