Job Summary

We are seeking a detailed oriented Senior Research Technician to join our Product Development team. The successful candidate will play a critical role in conducting biochemical and cellular experiments, troubleshooting and optimizing existing laboratory protocols and developing recent methods. This position requires advanced analytical capabilities to independently troubleshoot experiments, rigorously validate data accuracy, and maintain stringent quality controls.

Beyond technical execution, the Senior Research Technician will take on key administrative responsibilities, overseeing equipment preventative maintenance and calibration and maintaining inventories and cell banks while serving as a mentor and trainer to junior technicians and research staff.

Job Description

Reports to: Sr Manager Product Development

Location: 65 International Blvd., Toronto, ON

Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday

Salary: $65,000 to $75,000 per year depending on experience

Core Responsibilities

Conducting Experiments

The successful candidate will independently conduct experiments on mammalian tissue (including human) involving protein purification, protein assays, enzymatic assays and ELISAs.

They will collect and record experimental data, perform data analyses and accurately summarize the results in study reports. They will be expected to identify unexpected results and provide suggested approaches to investigate those results.

They will also be required to develop, transfer, troubleshoot and/or improve various laboratory methods and establish and update laboratory SOPs.

Administrative Duties

The successful candidate will be responsible for preventative maintenance and calibration of various laboratory equipment and for maintaining and updating material and sample inventories.



They will also be responsible for establishing and maintaining research cell banks.

Training and Mentoring

The successful candidate will be expected to act as a mentor to more junior research technicians and to provide training on laboratory methods and equipment to all research staff as appropriate.

Critical competencies required

Knowledge & Experience

Total Laboratory Experience: 5+ years in a biochemistry, cell biology and/or molecular biology laboratory in a research role (not QC). Previous experience with laboratory management preferred.

Biochemistry: In depth knowledge and experience performing various biochemical methods including SDS-PAGE, Western Blotting, ELISA, and protein quantitation is required. Experience with HPLC methods for analyzing proteins is an advantage.

Cell Culture: In depth knowledge and experience performing mammalian cell culture is required. Experience with connective tissue cell lines is an advantage.

Data Analysis: In depth knowledge and experience performing data analysis and visualization including the use of routine statistical methods including t-tests and ANOVA. Experience with GraphPad PRISM is an advantage.

Method Development: Knowledge and experience with developing biochemical and/or cell-based methods required.

Equipment Maintenance: Knowledge and experience with maintaining equipment is required. Experience with sourcing and setting up/qualifying new equipment an advantage.

Connective Tissue Specialization: Knowledge of connective tissue biology an advantage.

Skills:

Excellent oral and written communication skills required.

Strong technical problem-solving skills required

Demonstrated ability to work independently required.

Track Record of coaching and mentoring junior staff required.

Qualifications

BSc in biochemistry, biology or related discipline required. Advanced degree (MSc) preferred.

Must be able to work in Canada
