Headquartered in Toronto, the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) is responsible for investing in current infrastructure projects. The CIB’s mission is to work with provincial, territorial, municipal, federal, Indigenous and private sector investor partners to transform the way infrastructure is planned, financed and delivered in Canada.
Reporting to the VP, Investment Risk, the Director, Investment Risk and Equity Valuation, will focus on infrastructure and corporate/hybrid project finance investment risk assessment, with dedicated leadership for equity, equity-like and upside-sharing investment valuation, and valuation frameworks for non-traditional risk participation structures. The Director, Investment Risk and Equity Valuation, is responsible for reviewing transaction documentation and financial models, ensuring robust risk assessments and defensible valuation conclusions across infrastructure and corporate/hybrid project finance.
The Director, Investment Risk and Equity Valuation, requires a strategic mindset and the ability to influence investment decisions at every stage, from intake to financial close and ongoing monitoring. Your oversight will help to shape and evaluate the risk profile and value implications of major infrastructure investments, while your cross-functional collaboration will ensure alignment across the organization. By staying ahead of industry trends, valuation methodologies and market benchmarks and communicating complex risk insights with clarity, you will serve as a trusted advisor and thought leader.
Your responsibilities:
- Review internal and external transaction documentation and financial models to perform risk assessments and valuation reviews
- Provide independent scenario and sensitivity analysis on infrastructure transactions subject to revenue risk and equity return variability
- Provide clear, evidenced-based recommendations on risk mitigation valuation approaches, supporting informed decision-making across a diverse range of infrastructure investments, including traditional debt, project equity, and equity-like projects with upside-sharing, contingent return or risk participation features
- Lead the development, maintenance and application of standardized equity valuation methodologies,
playbooks and model review practices for CIB investments
- Challenge key valuation inputs, including discount rates, terminal values, revenue forecasts, downside protections, exit assumptions and probability-weighted outcomes
- Supervise and mentor Associates, Investment Risk, including providing ongoing training, performance feedback and fostering a positive, supportive work environment; the Director, Investment Risk and Equity Valuation, is expected to actively develop junior team members, demonstrating a commitment to talent growth and team cohesion
- Review accuracy and completeness of annual reviews and their related internal risk rating and valuation appropriateness, including ongoing fair value, impairment and return expectation considerations for equity and equity-like exposures
- Report on credit and market-related information to the VP, Investment Risk, on a regular basis with respect to the investments portfolio and any market or sector developments impacting the portfolio
- Maintain deep knowledge of industry dynamics, trends, global infrastructure financing models and private-market valuation practices. Staying ahead of market developments and sharing insights positions the Director, Investment Risk and Equity Valuation, as a thought leader within the organization
- Liaise with the investments team and other areas of the CIB including asset management, finance and accounting, as required, with respect to the investment portfolio from a risk and valuation perspective
- Other portfolio and valuation initiatives and duties as required
- Provide independent challenge to assumptions, methodologies, and risk conclusions presented by stakeholders
Your ideal profile:
- Degree in finance, accounting, economics or equivalent experience; CFA, MBA, highly desirable
- Minimum 7–10 years of Infrastructure investment analysis, valuation advisory experience, ideally at a bank,
regulated institution, MDB/IFI, infrastructure investor, pension fund, private equity platform or valuation advisory practice
- Demonstrated leadership of working across departments, facilitating communication and collaboration to support organizational goals
- Experience with infrastructure asset class, PPPs, project finance, preferably in any of the CIB’s priority sectors
- Expertise in lending, investments, equity valuation and risk assessment demonstrating market best practices
- Experience in credit risk rating methodologies, including infrastructure and project finance, and familiarity with valuation techniques such as DCF, comparable transactions, market benchmarks, probability-weighted scenarios and option-like payoff analysis
- Strong analytical skills and ability to summarize complex structures and related risks in a clear and concise manner
- Strong modelling skills, including valuation model build/review, scenario analysis and sensitivity testing and experience in using Excel, Word, PowerPoint and similar industry software
- Ability to establish consistent valuation standards, document assumptions clearly and support governance discussions with Investment, Asset Management, Finance and Accounting stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability to effectively mentor and develop junior team members
- Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks/transactions
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to synthesize complex data into clear, actionable information for senior leadership and stakeholders
- Bilingualism English/French is considered a strong asset
