Engineering Test Pilot – Fixed Wing / Rotary Wing (Transport Canada)

Selection process number: 26-MOT-EA-HRS-02856 Salary: $158,684 to $186,445 Level: AO-ETP-01 Who can apply: Persons residing in Canada, and Canadian citizens and Permanent residents abroad.

Duties

Determine the flight test program necessary for aircraft certification approval. Act as a test‑pilot flight crew member to conduct flight tests for certification and audit manufacturers’ production standards. Develop new regulations and advisory material for flight test techniques required for new aircraft, systems, or features lacking existing material.

Review qualifications and make specialist recommendations for ministerial delegation to individuals and organizations for design‑approval flight testing of aeronautical products. Maintain high-level conventional and flight‑test specific piloting skills and participate in career development and skills enhancement training as required. Work Environment

Our office is located at 159 Cleopatra Drive, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Operational Requirements

Willingness and ability to travel nationally and internationally as required. Willingness and ability to work overtime and weekends as required. For Stream 1: Must personally test fly all types of civil airplanes, often in critical flight envelope areas. For Stream 2: Must personally test fly all types of civil helicopters, often in critical flight envelope areas.

Essential Qualifications Education: Degree in engineering, mathematics, science, or a related field, or eligibility for Canadian professional engineering certification. Successful completion of a one‑year Engineering Test Pilot course or at least five years as an experimental or developmental test pilot with a civil certified transport category aircraft manufacturer.

Occupational Certification: Stream 1: Canadian Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL)



with Airplane Group I Instrument Rating and valid Restricted Radio‑Telephone Operator Certificate (Aeronautical). Stream 2: Canadian Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) – Helicopter Category with Group IV Instrument Rating and valid Restricted Radio‑Telephone Operator Certificate (Aeronautical).

Experience: Stream 1: Significant PIC experience in five or more airplane types and multiple test‑pilot (ETP) roles in airplane or system development and certification projects. Stream 2: Significant PIC experience in five or more helicopter types and multiple ETP roles in helicopter system development and certification projects. Knowledge of civil airworthiness certification design standards and advanced flight‑test techniques for the relevant aircraft type.

Abilities: Superior piloting skills; effective oral and written communication; analytical and problem‑solving skills.

Language: English is essential; additional language proficiency may be assessed later.

Asset Qualifications

Civil aircraft certification project experience. More than 2,500 flight hours.

Experience as a delegated certification test pilot in civil industry.

Experience with other aircraft types such as manned free balloons, airships, or emerging technologies (e.g., eVTOL). Stream 1: Experience with rotary‑wing aircraft and piloting multiple airplane types beyond PIC. Stream 2: Experience with fixed‑wing aircraft and piloting multiple helicopter types beyond PIC.
