Job Description:

Reporting to the Manager, Respectful Workplace Services, the Respectful Workplace Specialist is responsible for assessment, process determination, investigations and/or implementing appropriate alternate dispute measures to support concerns to resolution in accordance with the applicable Respectful Workplace Procedure for Employees or Medical Staff. The role further requires developing expertise in respectful workplace considerations for non-employees who are bound by the Medical Staff Rules and Bylaws, ensuring that all parties, regardless of employment status, experience a consistent, fair, and unbiased approach when addressing workplace incivility, bullying and harassment, discrimination,
and discriminatory harassment under the Respectful Workplace Policy. This work takes a people centred and trauma informed approach, combined with a strategic lens to identify systemic factors that may be contributing to or perpetuating workplace conflict and that may require the implementation of broader organizational responses.
Travel may be a requirement of this position. Transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of Island Health in accordance with the service assignment and may require the use of a personal vehicle.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Training And Experience
Degree in a relevant discipline such as Human Resources, Organizational Development, Business Administration, or other relevant social science discipline, supplemented with 5-7 years of recent, related experience in workplace investigation and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, preferably in a health care or other complex unionized setting. Valid BC Driver's license.
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
Skills And Abilities
- Demonstrated expertise in conducting investigations, interviewing, report writing, and applying human rights, OHS, labour relations,
and collective agreement legislation to resolve workplace complaints.
- Strong understanding of systemic barriers affecting equity-seeking groups, with the ability to apply trauma-informed, and bias-aware approaches to ensure fair and inclusive processes.
- Advanced skills in conflict resolution, mediation, facilitation, and dispute resolution, including leading respectful workplace interventions and restoring working relationships.
- Ability to coach, educate, and lead workshops for diverse audiences on respectful workplace practices, behavioural expectations, and organizational culture.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively across all organizational levels and disciplines.
- Proven ability to build and maintain effective working relationships in complex, multi-union environments while working both independently and collaboratively.
- Demonstrated supportive leadership and ability to influence, guide, and work with diverse groups across the organization.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and emotionally charged situations in a dynamic, high-pressure environment.
- Proficient in HR systems, databases, and Microsoft Office programs.
- Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and continuous learning through completion of accredited training in mediation skills, conflict coaching, workplace conflict management, and related certifications.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
