Position Overview

Metro Community Living (MCL) is seeking a skilled and dependable Maintenance Technician to join our team. MCL operates residential homes that provide 24/7 staffing care for persons with disabilities. The Maintenance Technician will play a critical role in ensuring our homes remain secure, functional, and well-maintained for both residents and staff.

Employment Details

- Position Type: Full-Time, Permanent
- Hours: Monday to Friday, Flexible start and end times. (40 Hours per week)
- Salary: $50,000-$65,000 (based on experience)
- Benefits: Employer-sponsored health plan
- Vehicle: Company truck provided
- Overtime: As required
- Location: Various MCL residential properties within Nova Scotia

Key Responsibilities

The Maintenance Technician will be responsible for the upkeep and general maintenance of MCL residential properties, including but not limited to:

General Maintenance & Repairs

- Perform routine, preventative, and corrective maintenance across multiple residential properties
- Complete general carpentry work, including framing, trim and finish work, doors and hardware, flooring, decking, stairs and railings, and general interior and exterior repairs
- Complete drywall repairs including patching, taping, finishing, and surface preparation
- Prepare surfaces and apply paint and finishes to walls, woodwork, doors, furniture, and equipment to a professional standard
- Perform minor electrical & plumbing repairs and adjustments within the scope of general building maintenance — including replacing light bulbs and fluorescent tubes, resetting breakers, replacing hardware and fixtures, clearing minor blockages, and similar routine tasks
- Coordinate with on-site staff before and during work to confirm access,



schedule tasks around resident routines and household activities, and minimize disruption to the home
- Communicate clearly with MCL Management and staff regarding work in progress, expected duration, and any follow-up required, and report maintenance concerns raised by staff through the appropriate channels
- Assess each issue on arrival and determine the appropriate course of action, in line with appropriate workplace safety policies and procedures.
- Support contractors and service providers on site as required, including site access, scoping of work, and confirming completion to standard for both quality and safety.
- Conduct regular property walkthroughs to identify emerging maintenance needs, safety hazards, and deficiencies before they become urgent
- Maintain building appearance, structural integrity, and general safety across all assigned properties
- Manage other internal employees to coordinate work and review to ensure the work is performed to the safety and quality standards of MCL.

Planning & Scheduling

- Independently manage and prioritize a weekly schedule of maintenance tasks across multiple properties
- Set clear goals and develop organized work plans to ensure all projects are completed in a timely manner




- Maintain accurate records of work completed and update tracking documentation (spreadsheet proficiency an asset)
- Respond to urgent maintenance needs with a strong sense of urgency and professionalism

Qualifications & Skills

Required

- Demonstrated experience in general building maintenance or a related trade
- Proficiency with hand and power tools
- Knowledge of basic carpentry, minor plumbing, and minor electrical repairs
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Valid driver’s licence and reliable transportation
- Ability to pass a criminal record check (required when working in care environments)

Preferred / Assets

- Experience working in residential care or community living environments
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel or similar spreadsheet software for record-keeping
- Trade certification or journeyperson designation in a relevant field

Working Conditions

- Work is performed at various residential properties within Nova Scotia; a company truck is provided for travel between sites
- Must be comfortable working in occupied residential homes where vulnerable individuals reside
- Occasional overtime may be required based on operational needs
