Purpose
Reporting to the Warehouse Manager and Operations Manager, the Brown Bag Lunch Delivery Driver is deeply committed to making a positive impact on vulnerable populations, and those experiencing food insecurity in our community. This position will be essential in supporting the Root Cellar Food & Wellness Hub’s Brown Bag Lunch program, making all the food deliveries to the schools each week. The Brown Bag Lunch Driver will organize orders and deliver food and supplies to schools across all districts. This person should be comfortable with driving large vehicles including cargo vans, have strong defensive and winter driving skills, and have a clean driving record and a current Class 5 Alberta driver’s license. They will be capable of performing heavy, strenuous physical labor, including repetitive lifting, pushing, pulling of 50+ pounds under strict time constraints. This position will need to be flexible, with work hours primarily 7:00am – 3:00pm to deliver food throughout the area and assist in operations upon their return. They will also support with some occasional afternoon transportation, facility, Warehouse, and Emergency Food Pantry duties.
Outside of the school year (such as during summer and school breaks), this position transitions into a versatile operations support role, providing essential hands-on labor for garden and groundskeeping, community events, and warehouse coverage. This is a physically demanding, fast-paced position requiring strong physical fitness, stamina, and a proactive "pitch-in" mindset.
Qualifications
- Capable of performing heavy, strenuous physical labor, including repetitive lifting, pushing, and pulling of 50+ pounds under strict time constraints.
- Kind, Outgoing and friendly
- Clean Driver’s Abstract and current Class 5 Alberta driver’s license, with comfort driving large vehicles and cargo vans.
- Clean police background check with vulnerable sector check
- Excellent organizational, time-management, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and meet rigid daily delivery schedules.
Responsibilities
- Assemble orders and work alongside the Programs Coordinator and volunteers in the kitchen to prepare Brown Bag Lunch meals.
- Safely load, deliver, and unload food and supply orders from delivery vehicles to community schools across all districts on a strict morning schedule.
- Perform daily vehicle inspections (checking fluid levels, tire pressure, etc.), maintain accurate daily driver maintenance logs, and immediately report any maintenance needs.
- Maintain the delivery vehicle's cleanliness to a high standard suitable for food transportation.
- Represent the Root Cellar Brand & maintain relationships with each school's Administration Team.
- Assist with afternoon transportation, facility upkeep, general warehouse duties, and Emergency Food Pantry support upon returning from routes.
- Assists volunteer staff, program staff and event staff when needed.
- Always displays a positive image of the Root Cellar Food & Wellness Hub.
- All other duties as per the direction of the Executive Director or Operations Manager.
Summer & School Breaks
- Transition smoothly during school breaks (e.g., summer months) to provide operational support across the organization.
- Garden & Groundskeeping: Execute physical outdoor maintenance, garden care, and property groundskeeping tasks.
- Warehouse & Vacation Coverage: staff time off coverage, manage heavy inventory, and assist warehouse staff with day-to-day logistics.
- Event Support: Provide hands-on labor, setup, tear-down, and logistics support for community fundraising and organizational events.
Team Support
- Participate in team and staff activities to foster positive working relationships.
- Attend Fundraiser events as required
Physical Requirements
- Continuous and repetitive pushing, pulling, and lifting of 50+ lbs.
- Defensive Driving
- Constant active movement, bending, loading, and unloading in varying weather conditions and fast-paced environments.
- Daily local travel, Comfort and experience driving large cargo vans (note: vehicle is rear-wheel drive, requiring strong winter driving skills).
