As the only continuous care transitional shelter of our kind in the Region of Waterloo, we provide a secure, trauma-informed workplace for women (aged 16+) who are pregnant, parenting infants, or working hard to regain care of their children.

What Would I Be Doing?

Using trauma-informed, strengths-based practices, Transitional Shelter Workers support mothers and young children facing challenges related to poverty, mental health, and substance use. Our casual team provides essential coverage when residents need it most, primarily on day, afternoon, and overnight shifts during weekends and holidays, including Christmas Day.

Key Responsibilities:

- Client Support: Complete intakes and departures, respond to crises, and resolve conflict with empathy, professionalism, and sound judgment.
- Family-Centred Care: Support child development, connect residents with community resources, and help ensure each client’s voice is heard.
- Shelter Operations: Help maintain a safe, welcoming, and organized environment through routine household, administrative, and data-entry tasks, including work in HIFIS/Emhware.
- Team Communication: Support smooth shift transitions through timely communication with coworkers and management and assist with onboarding volunteers or students when needed.
- Standards and Safety: Uphold health, safety, documentation, and confidentiality standards, including compliance with PHIPA and agency procedures.

What You Bring to the Team

- Educational Foundation:



A two-year post-secondary diploma or degree in a relevant field (e.g., Social Work, Social Service Work, Addictions, Mental Health) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Sector Experience: Proven experience supporting individuals navigating complex trauma, mental health challenges, and substance use.
- Crisis Management: The ability to work independently, maintain a calm presence under pressure, and exercise excellent problem-solving skills.
- Strong Communication: Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to build professional, inclusive relationships with staff, participants, and community partners.
- Tech Savvy: Proficiency in Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams) and comfort learning sector-specific databases.
- Clearances & Certifications: A current Police Vulnerable Sector Check (completed within the last 3 months) and a valid First Aid/CPR certificate. Willingness to complete additional training (e.g., Food Safety, WHMIS) is required.

Working Conditions & Physical Environment:

- Transitional Support Workers are required to provide direct and meaningful contact with clients in a fast-paced, sometimes high-stress environment.
- Work holidays and/or stats as scheduled
- Physical requirements include standing for extended periods, sitting, and safely lifting up to 25 lbs.
- Accessibility Note: Our facility is located in a beautiful, heritage-designated, three-story building without an elevator; team members must be able to navigate stairs regularly throughout their shift.
