POSITION SCOPE:
As a member of the Disability Support Outreach Team (DSOT) for the Western Region of Nova Scotia, the Psychologist(s) will support Disability Support Program (DSP) participants who require specialized allied health services to transition from large facilities to residences in the community and/or to achieve their other goals.

Members of the Disability Support Outreach Team work in conjunction with the Allied Health leaders at the Department of Opportunities and Social Development (DOSD) and with DOSD employees attached to the Regional Hub, including the Intense Planning and Support Coordinators (IPSCs).

The successful candidate(s) will provide psychological services to a diverse clientele of individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities, mental health challenges, and complex behavioural issues.

Funding is for a .8 full-time equivalent (FTE). This could be filled by one individual (4 days/week) or two people (2 days a week each). Note: Not all benefits may be available depending on the hours worked.

Given the nature of the role and the requirement for travel throughout the Western Region, there is flexibility with respect to location. Travel to Core Support Services in the Annapolis Valley would be required for some initial onboarding and for occasional meetings or training, but the clinician(s) could work remotely from anywhere in the region.

Responsible to the Director of Clinical Services at CORE Support Services, the Psychologist(s) will provide specialized psychological services to DSP participants in the Annapolis Valley and Southwest Nova. The Psychologist(s) will adhere to the provincial regulatory body’s professional and ethical standards, the mission and values of CORE Support Services, the Disability Support Outreach Teams’ Guiding Framework,



and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). The Psychologist(s) will demonstrate respect for the autonomy, dignity, and rights of persons with disabilities through person-directed practice and supported decision-making.

As an integral member of an interdisciplinary team of allied health professionals, the Psychologist will conduct assessments, and plan, develop, deliver, and evaluate psychological interventions to address the mental health and behavioural needs of adults with a range of disabilities. The Psychologist will work directly and collaboratively with participants, the participants’ personal support networks (as selected by the individual participant; may include family and non-family), DSP-funded service providers, partners in the disability and health sectors, teammates at CORE, and colleagues at the Department of Opportunities and Social Development.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree in Psychology from a School of Psychology at an accredited university

Registration or eligibility for registration with the Nova Scotia Board of Examiners in Psychology (NSBEP)

Experience in the assessment and treatment of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental illness, dual diagnosis (IDD + mental illness), autism, emotional issues, and/or behaviors of concern

Eagerness to be part of a historically significant change in the way individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are supported in the province





A passion for promoting inclusion for people with disabilities and helping break down barriers to their full participation in society

Demonstrated ability to work competently with individuals, families, groups, and community partners

Commitment to ethical, evidence-based, trauma informed practice and to upholding the rights and dignity of individuals with disabilities

Proponent of supported decision-making and person-directed planning

A strong work ethic with excellent initiative and accountability

Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Excellent clinical judgement and problem-solving ability

Outstanding interpersonal skills with an exceptional level of empathy and compassion

Demonstrated commitment to collaboration and evidence of effective relationship building in a team workplace

Ability to work in office/clinic and community settings, and virtually, as required

Experience providing recommendations on a consultative basis

Ability to adjust practice based on constructive feedback and clinical supervision

Potential to assume a leadership role

Commitment to increasing capacity in the disability sector, e.g., front-line workers

Willingness to share professional expertise with others, including but not limited to students, and to provide training on topics relevant to the clientele

Commitment to keeping information obtained through work private and confidential

Current Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Search

A reliable vehicle and willingness to travel within the Western Region on a regular basis
