About the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society

The Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society (VAFCS) is a community-led Indigenous organization dedicated to supporting the cultural, educational, social, recreational, and economic well-being of urban Indigenous Peoples. Through a wide range of programs and services, VAFCS creates culturally safe spaces that promote belonging, wellness, self-determination, and opportunity for individuals, families, Elders, youth, and children.

Position Summary

The Maintenance Worker is responsible for performing routine maintenance, repairs, cleaning, groundskeeping, and event support to ensure VAFCS facilities remain safe, clean, welcoming, and well maintained. Working under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, this position contributes to creating culturally respectful environments that support the delivery of programs and services to Indigenous individuals, families, Elders, youth, children, residents, staff, and visitors.

Reports to: Maintenance Supervisor

Key Responsibilities:

Building Maintenance

- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs including carpentry, painting, drywall, plumbing, lighting, and door hardware.
- Complete preventive maintenance tasks as assigned.
- Inspect buildings and equipment and report repair needs.

Cleaning & Grounds

- Perform routine cleaning, sanitizing, and waste removal.
- Maintain common areas, washrooms, offices, and outdoor spaces.
- Assist with seasonal grounds maintenance, including snow removal and lawn care.

Event & Facility Support

- Set up and take down tables, chairs, and equipment for meetings, ceremonies, and community events.
- Assist with gymnasium and Community Services Boardroom (CSBR) setups.
- Restore spaces following events.

Safety & Security

- Conduct routine building safety inspections.




- Report hazards and maintenance concerns promptly.
- Assist emergency responders by providing access to facilities and directing them to the appropriate location.
- Follow safe work practices and organizational policies.

Documentation

- Maintain maintenance logs and work records.
- Report completed work and outstanding maintenance issues to the Maintenance Supervisor.

Qualifications :

Education and Experience

- First Nations, Metis, Inuit or Aboriginal ancestry is preferred.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum two (2) years' experience in building maintenance, janitorial services, or a related field.
- Experience using hand and power tools.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

- Basic knowledge of building maintenance, plumbing, painting, and electrical repairs.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Positive organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work and lift equipment as required.

Additional Requirements

- Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence is an asset.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector Check.

Working Conditions

This position requires indoor and outdoor work in a variety of weather conditions and involves lifting, bending, climbing ladders, operating maintenance equipment, and occasional evening or weekend work to support organizational operations and events.
