Position Summary
Tl’azt’en Nation is seeking a compassionate, organized, and dedicated Elders Coordinator to support and advocate for the well-being of our Elders. Reporting to the Language and Culture Department, this position will focus on coordinating activities, programs, transportation, and resources that enhance Elders’ participation in community life.
The Elders Coordinator will build positive relationships with Elders and ensure their needs, interests, and concerns are heard, respected, and supported. This position requires flexibility, patience, kindness, and a genuine commitment to serving Elders in a respectful and culturally appropriate manner.
Key Responsibilities
Elder Support and Engagement
- Build and maintain respectful, trusting relationships with Elders.
- Organize and host regular Elders’ Teas and gatherings every few weeks.
- Coordinate Elder participation in meetings, events, conferences, and community activities.
- Provide transportation for Elders when required using a Nation vehicle or personal vehicle as approved.
- Ensure Elders feel welcomed, valued, and supported in all programs and events.
- Assist Elders in accessing available services, resources, and supports.
Event Coordination and Fundraising
- Plan and coordinate activities, outings, workshops, and special events for Elders.
- Organize fundraising initiatives to support Elder participation in conferences, cultural gatherings, and other events identified by Elders.
- Assist with travel arrangements and logistics for Elder-related activities.
- Work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and community partners to support successful events.
Funding and Administration
- Research and apply for grants and funding opportunities that support Elder programs and initiatives.
- Assist with proposal writing and reporting requirements.
- Maintain accurate records, schedules, and program documentation.
- Prepare correspondence, reports, and program materials as required.
Collaboration
- Work as part of the Language and Culture Department team.
- Collaborate with other Tl’azt’en Nation departments and community organizations when needed.
- Participate in departmental meetings and planning sessions.
- Support initiatives that promote the inclusion and well-being of Elders throughout the community.
Qualifications
Required
- Minimum Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Experience working with Elders, community programs, or Indigenous organizations is an asset.
- Respectful, patient, kind, and dependable.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
- Robust organizational and time-management skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook,
and Teams.
- Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
- Clean Driver’s Abstract.
- Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and occasional weekends, to support Elder activities and events.
Knowledge and Cultural Understanding
- Understanding of Indigenous cultures and communities.
- Knowledge of Tl’azt’en Nation is considered an asset.
- Willingness to learn the Dakelh way of being, language, values, and traditional practices.
- Commitment to respecting and supporting Elders in a culturally safe and respectful manner.
Working Conditions
This is a part-time position with flexible hours. Scheduling will be based on the needs of Elders and may vary depending on meetings, events, fundraising activities, conferences, and community initiatives.
