Full Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Fire Alarm Systems Specialist (Programmer) to join our team. This role is ideal for a highly skilled professional who is passionate about life safety systems, advanced programming, troubleshooting, and delivering high-quality fire protection solutions. You will be responsible for programming, commissioning, verifying, and supporting complex fire alarm systems while ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards.
Responsibilities
- Program, configure, verify, and perform acceptance testing of complex fire alarm systems.
- Interpret sequences of operation and implement system programming to meet project requirements.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot complex fire alarm and life safety system issues.
- Perform system architecture calculations and identify faulty electronic components.
- Repair, replace, and commission fire alarm system components.
- Interpret and apply applicable fire alarm codes and standards, including CAN/ULC-S524, CAN/ULC-S536, CAN/ULC-S537, and the applicable Building Code.
- Prepare detailed verification reports, technical documentation, and inspection records.
- Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, wiring diagrams, and integration drawings.
- Review project documentation and verify materials required for installations.
- Coordinate with project managers, engineers, technicians, electricians, and other trades.
- Manage fire alarm projects from design review through commissioning and final acceptance.
- Mentor and train junior technicians on programming, troubleshooting, and industry best practices.
- Travel to customer sites as required and provide technical support during commissioning and service work.
- Follow all company safety policies and complete Jobsite Hazard Assessments (JHAs).
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of experience programming and servicing fire alarm systems.
- Strong experience programming and troubleshooting fire alarm systems.
- Hands-on experience with Autocall, Simplex, Kidde/Vigilant, and Vesda systems is highly preferred.
- Experience with Notifier, Mircom, Siemens, or other fire alarm platforms is considered an asset.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, electrical drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
- Solid knowledge of CAN/ULC-S524, CAN/ULC-S536, CAN/ULC-S537, and applicable Building Codes.
- ASTTBC Fire Alarm Systems (AL) certification preferred.
- CFAA (Canadian Fire Alarm Association) Certification required.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence with a clean driving record.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work on ladders, scaffolding, and elevated work areas.
- Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Willingness to travel and work occasional evenings or after-hours when required.
