Carpenter / Carpenter Apprentice (Government Buildings)

We are seeking a reliable, safety-focused Carpenter or Carpenter Apprentice to support maintenance, repair, and small renovation projects in Canadian government buildings. This role includes flooring installation, suspended (dropped) ceiling installation, plastering/drywall finishing, painting, demolition, and a variety of general carpentry tasks while working in active, security-conscious facilities.

Key Responsibilities

· Install, repair, and replace commercial flooring systems (e.g., vinyl plank/tile, sheet goods, laminate, carpet tile) including subfloor prep, leveling, and transitions.

· Install and repair suspended (dropped) ceiling systems (T-bar/grid), tiles, trims, access panels, and related components.

· Perform plastering/drywall work including patching, taping, mudding, sanding, and surface preparation to a paint-ready finish.

· Paint and finish interior surfaces (walls, ceilings, trim) including caulking, priming, and matching existing finishes.

· Complete demolition and selective removals safely (walls, ceilings, flooring, millwork), including containment, dust control, and proper disposal.

· Carry out general carpentry repairs and installations (doors/hardware, baseboards, framing, blocking, cabinetry, minor millwork).

· Read and interpret work orders, sketches, and basic drawings; take measurements and lay out work accurately.

· Maintain a clean, organized work area in occupied buildings; protect adjacent finishes and ensure minimal disruption to occupants.

· Use and maintain tools and equipment safely; report hazards, incidents, and deficiencies promptly.

· Coordinate with supervisors,



building staff, and other trades to plan work, access areas, and complete tasks on schedule.

Qualifications

· Carpenter (Journeyperson): Trade certification as a Carpenter.

· Carpenter Apprentice: Registered apprentice or demonstrable on-the-job carpentry experience with willingness to learn and follow direction.

· Experience in commercial/institutional environments is an asset (occupied spaces, service work, repairs).

· Ability to pass site access requirements, which may include a Government of Canada Reliability Status security screening (as applicable to the site).

· Valid driver’s licence and reliable transportation (if travel between sites is required).

· Comfortable using smartphones/tablets for work orders, photos, and basic documentation (if required).

Skills & Competencies

· Strong knowledge of tools, materials, and safe work practices for carpentry, drywall finishing, painting, ceiling systems, and flooring.

· Ability to produce clean, professional finishes and repairs that match existing conditions.

· Accurate measuring, cutting, layout, and attention to detail.

· Good communication and customer-service mindset when working around building occupants and client representatives.





· Ability to work independently or as part of a team; dependable attendance and punctuality.

· Problem-solving skills for diagnosing issues and proposing practical repair solutions.

Work Environment & Safety

· Work is performed primarily indoors in active/occupied government facilities.

· Must follow all site-specific security, conduct, and safety rules, including sign-in/out procedures and restricted-area requirements.

· Physical demands include lifting/carrying materials, working from ladders/scaffolds, kneeling, bending, and standing for extended periods.

· Use of appropriate PPE is required based on hazards and site rules (e.g., safety footwear, hard hat, eye/hearing protection, high-visibility apparel, respirators as needed).
