The work

We're a small Canadian company founded by a physician, building software products alongside a clinical practice.

We have two products in flight, both web applications and both close to a first commercial release. Neither is greenfield, and neither is finished.

The job is to take one of them the rest of the way, to the point where it can be sold as a product.

We'll walk you through both once you're on board, and you'll have a say in which one you take on.

Why we're hiring this way

We've had capable developers go quiet on us, and no amount of interviewing caught it in advance. So instead of three rounds of calls, we start with a paid two-week engagement on real, scoped work. You're paid for it regardless of what happens next, and both sides find out quickly whether this works.

If it does, it becomes an ongoing engagement with real scope — up to and including technical ownership of the product.

What the two weeks look like

- Days 1–3: Audit your assigned codebase. Run the existing test suite and lint tooling, and deliver a short written assessment — what's there, what's actually broken, what you'd do first, and what the tests aren't covering.
- Days 4–10: Ship one defined slice of work. We'll agree on it together after your audit.
- Throughout: A three-line written check-in at the end of each working day. What you did, what's blocking you, what's next. This one isn't optional.

What actually decides this

You need to be technically solid — that's the floor, not the differentiator. What decides it is whether you communicate:

- You reply within one business day. Every time.
- You say “I don't know” and “this is going to take longer than I estimated” early, not after the deadline.
- You ask questions before you build the wrong thing.
- You write things down so we're not reconstructing decisions later.





If your pattern is to go dark for a week and then surface with something impressive, this isn't the right role for you.

Requirements

- 3–5+ years building and shipping production web applications, with work you can point to
- Strong TypeScript. Both codebases are TypeScript end to end — frontend, backend, and shared types. This one isn't negotiable.
- React, plus one server-side TypeScript framework. One product is NestJS; the other is Next.js 15 with the App Router. We don't expect both — tell us which you're strong in and we'll match you accordingly.
- PostgreSQL, working through a typed data layer — Prisma on one side, Supabase on the other.
- You've put an LLM API into a real product. Anthropic or OpenAI SDKs, and you've had to think about cost, rate limits, and what happens when a call fails or returns something unusable.
- Self-directed. You take a problem, ask what you need to ask, and move it forward. We're trying to stop being the bottleneck on our own products — not add someone else who needs unblocking.
- Comfortable working inside someone else's codebase with imperfect documentation
- Based in Canada, and able to invoice as a self-employed Canadian contractor
- At least two hours of daily overlap with Pacific Time
- Your own equipment and development setup

Nice to have

- Stripe subscriptions and billing flows — getting a product to the point of taking money is part of the job
- Supabase, including Row-Level Security
- Google Cloud — Cloud Run, Cloud SQL, Cloud Storage,



Cloud Scheduler
- Real testing habits — Jest, Vitest, Playwright, accessibility checks. One codebase already has this discipline built in and we'd like to keep it.
- Monorepo work (npm or pnpm workspaces), GitHub Apps and Octokit, Expo/React Native, or i18n
- You understand privacy and security seriously — SOC 2, data handling, working in regulated environments. Neither product is clinical today, but the company's direction is, and we'd rather hire toward that than away from it.
- You've been a first or founding engineer somewhere

Terms

- $1,750 CAD per week, approx. 15 hours per week, two weeks, paid on invoice
- Fully remote, within Canada
- Contractor agreement and IP assignment signed before day one
- For the right person: an ongoing engagement with expanded scope
