Mushuau Innu First Nation is seeking a dependable, safety-focused, and versatile Heavy Equipment Operator to join our Operations & Maintenance team.

This is more than a traditional heavy equipment operator position. Working in a remote northern community, you will play an important role in maintaining roads, community infrastructure, public facilities, and essential services that support the daily lives of community members.

About the Role

Reporting to the Director of Operations & Maintenance, the Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe operation, inspection, maintenance, and routine servicing of heavy equipment used for construction, road maintenance, snow removal, land clearing, and community infrastructure projects.

The successful candidate will also support a variety of municipal and public works activities and may provide backup support for other essential operational services when required.

What You'll Do

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Heavy Equipment Operation

- Safely operate a variety of heavy equipment including loaders, excavators, graders, backhoes, skid steers, bulldozers, dump trucks, and snow removal equipment.
- Complete road construction, grading, excavation, ditching, drainage, and land clearing projects.
- Transport and move gravel, sand, soil, rock, and other materials.
- Assist with community infrastructure projects and repairs.

Equipment Maintenance

- Perform daily equipment inspections and preventative maintenance.
- Diagnose routine mechanical issues and complete minor repairs and adjustments.
- Maintain equipment logs and maintenance records.
- Report equipment requiring major repairs.

Community Operations

- Provide snow removal and ice control throughout the community.
- Complete grounds maintenance, brush cutting, drainage improvements, and seasonal maintenance.




- Assist with construction, repairs, and maintenance of community infrastructure.
- Perform manual labour as required to support Operations & Maintenance projects.

Operational Support

As part of a small and collaborative team, you may also provide backup support for essential community services, including:

- Airstrip maintenance and operations.
- Freight unloading and material handling when seasonal shipments arrive.
- Fuel truck operation and fuel deliveries when the designated operator is unavailable.
- Emergency response and other operational priorities as required.

What We're Looking For

The successful candidate will have:

- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Heavy Equipment Operator certification or equivalent experience.
- One (1) to three (3) years of experience operating heavy equipment.
- Valid driver's licence with the appropriate class for heavy equipment operation.
- Experience operating multiple types of heavy equipment.
- Strong knowledge of equipment maintenance and preventative inspections.
- Ability to diagnose routine mechanical issues.
- Solid commitment to workplace safety.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
- Respect for Indigenous cultures, traditions, and community values.

Experience working in remote communities, municipal public works, construction, freight handling, airstrip operations, or fuel delivery is considered an asset.

Additional Requirements

The successful candidate must be able to:

- Successfully complete a Criminal Record Check and other background checks as required.
- Comply with all Mushuau Innu First Nation policies and procedures.
- Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and reliability.
- Participate in required safety and operational training.

Pay: $30.00-$40.00 per hour
